Hi I think your unit has memory card receptance unit bad.( the CF card inserting area pins---bent and shorting), or some of loosen screw moving around and shorting. Mostly it is the pin problem. Your local repair shop would charge around $50 to 195 depend on what they really want to charge. If you are going to repair shop, ask them check your CF card female socket condition.) Thanks and best regard!

You can replace the LCD panel but will probably have to get it from a scrap EOS 300 and then work out how to do it yourself.

No camera repairer will touch your model though: it was a very cheaply made model designed and built on Canon's behalf by Kodak. As such it was really only designed to last up to five years and to then be thrown away. They simply aren't designed to be disassembled and repaired so other parts may break during the work and are quite literally worthless on the second hand market. When they do sell it's usually to those who make the mistake of thinking they're getting an EOS 300d...

It's not all doom and gloom though; because they're worthless perfectly good functional examples are sometimes available on FreeCycle and can be obtained for next to nothing on auction websites. Usually the only value is in the lens; cheaply made kit lenses are worth peanuts, but sometimes they come with a decent bit of glass which still retains a resale value.

I hope that my reply has given you a few realistic options regarding your camera and that you now understand why nobody else wants to repair it. Please take a moment to rate my answer.

My lcd screen has a scratch on it. can it be replaced?

Yes it can. It is something that requires some disassembly and once you open the back of the camera you run the risk of damaging other components. I wouold recommend taking to a local camera store or repair shop. The parts are readily available from Canon Parts dept.732-521-7230

I have a canon eos 1000 35mm with no flash. Works fine, but the LCD in the viewfinder has a large blot on it. Any ideas? Repairable?

Yes, its repairable, but frankly it wouldn't be cost effective to do so. The EOS 1000 is selling for less than $40 for the body on the used market:

and it would cost you much much more to send it off to Canon and have the LCD panel replaced.
