IDE is the old bus. Most older computers and even the new ones may have an IDE bus. It is flat and long. The cable looks like a wide ribbon. The new ones are SATA. These are thin cables much like the USB. The connectors also look different. If you have a newer PC, most likely it is SATA. Try to keep SATA hard drives and leave IDE for a CDROM or something. It is about reusing what you have before getting new ones. So, the newer SATA is preferred. Open up the cover and look; or check the specs on your computer model. For example, I have 4 SATA ports and one IDE. I still use my old IDE hard drive and IDE CDROM. When I got a new DVD writer, I got a SATA one. Lately I also bought a 1 TB SATA hard drive. I did not remove old hard drive and CD. I have enough slots to keep them all.

Tips for a great answer:
One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps don
