Visual check that the bar is not bent. ensure correct chain for the saw .different chains need different sproket tooth set ups. visually check this for proper full engagement.exactly how tight are you trying to get this thing? the chain may need a little slack to keep it from binding.

I have a Stihl MS 290, runs great, but the chain keeps tightening it's self on it's own

That's an unusual problem, usually the opposite happens. After making sure the chain brake is off, loosen the two nuts that hold the bar. Be sure to hold the bar up when adjusting the tensioner screw and adjust until the chain is just snug, but not too tight. While still holding the bar up, tighten the two nuts firmly. Check to see that the chain can move freely by hand. Then start the saw and run the chain at speed with something in front of the nose to check for adequate lubrication. You should note a slight fine spray of oil on the object in front of the nose of the bar. Inadequate lubrication, a chain that is binding on the bar, or an overly tight chain can cause the bar to heat up and expand, further tightening the chain. A properly adjusted Stihl saw will use almost all of the chain oil in the reservoir for every tank of gas. Too much oil is better than too little. The oil feed may have to be adjusted for operating in temperature extremes. If operating in very hot conditions, be sure that the saw has not run out of chain oil. The oil feeds faster when hot.

Why does the chain keeps tightening

Has it ever come off while using it? If so, there may be burrs on the drive teeth making the chain wider than the bar opening, also if there is no oil getting to chain while operating chain could bind from heat, check sprocket on the bar tip for blockage and inspect the clutch bearing.

Tensioner screw won't engage, can't tighten new chain

First question is regarding the chain. Is it an old worn out chain? If it is, then replace it because it is too long and the chain pitch does not match the drive sprocket, causing rapid wear.. Then back off on the tensioner, all the way and reassemble bar/chain and cover plate, making sure the finger on the tensioner goes into the hole/slot on the bar. Do not tighten the cover fasteners all the way. Then, tension the chain with the end of the bar lifted upward. When you have the proper tension, then tighten the cover plate fasteners. Chain should not bind. Whenever you wish to readjust, loosen the cover plate fasteners about a turn, adjust tension and retighten cover plate.

Chain dowsn't stay tight

Between the chain bar and the body there is an adjusting screw, if the adjusting screw is stripped it will not pull on the chain bar to tighten the chain.
procedure for tightening chain. loosen the chain guard nuts, tighten the bar adjusting screw by turning to the right or clockwise, the chain has to roll freely around the bar but not bind. check with gloves or rag, don't use bare hands to avoid accidents. once chain is adjusted, tighten the chain guard nuts. good luck!

Could you please advise how to tighten the chain

Depending on the chainsaw, you will have an outer nut on the right hand side of the bar the chain

rides on, you have to loosen this nut, and on the left side against the body to the left of the bar

there is a screw clock wise to the right will tighten the chain, and counter clock wise will loosen

the chain. when you tighten the chain do not over tighten, never grab the chain on the bar with your

bare hands either use gloves or a rag, you want the chain to be able to move freely around the bar

but you do not want it to bind or come off the bar . once you have it adjusted make sure you lock

down the outer nut or nuts. make sure the chain is always oiled to prevent accidents. good luck!

My Ryobi 40cc chainsaw saw runs strong, but the chain binds and will not turn. The safety break is not engaged and the chain is not tighten to tight. I think it maybe the sprocket but it does not look...

If your chain has recently jumped off the bar while running, your chain may have "burs" on the drive links (part of the chain that rides in the bar groove). These burs will make the chain rub the inside of the rails and thus bind the chain in the groove. You can file these off with a flat file if there aren't very many, but you may need to just replace the chain. You can find files, bars, chains & sprockets for your saw at PartsBuggy.com.

Chain binds saw dies saw runs fine with out bar chain on clutch bearing? help poluan 3416 16 inch 34cc

Is your chain oiler working? If you're using saw a lot and the oiler isn't working properly the chain will get hot and bind up especially if the chain is too tight. Tighten the chain so that you can squeeze it in the center of the bar, with your second and third finger on the sides of your fingers (not a very strong grip) and you should be able to almost pull the chain out of the bar guide but not quite. Clean the oiler hole in your bar where the chain oiler injects oil into the bar. You can also run your saw without a bar and chain and see if the oiler is pushing oil out of the injector.

Chain binds when nuts on side cover are tightened

The drive links go in the bar groove and between the teeth of the sprocket (make sure aren't between the sprocket and engine).

The chain has come off of my 14'' poulan gas chainsaw and I can't get it back on?

Release chain tension. Loosen nut on bar, re-install chain, check for chain not binding when moved by hand, but snug on bar, tighten and you should be back in business.

Sounds like the chain brake may be causing it.
