Specific Maps are licensed to be used with specific devices. However, if your device has a card slot, and an additional map is stored on a card, you can choose which map to use. To do so: Press the change preferences Use the right arrow key to change the page Look for Manage maps Tap Switch maps A list of the maps available is displayed. Select you wetern Europe map.
Assuming the maps have been registered for your device.........try resetting the device. If the maps are not registered, it may eventually boot up, but you'll get a message saying that the maps are not authorised for this device.
you may have run out of memory for the full map, your device can use a 2Gb max SDcard which should be enough for all your maps. It will have put placeholder there and tryed to drop the full map but you can only see the bit it could store to the memory.
First make sure you have a backup of your NEW ONE XL. You should be able to connect your XL to your PC using USB but not use TomTom home software. Your TomTom should appear in "my computer" as a drive . OR , put the SD card in a USB reader connected to a PC , that way you can look at and copy from or to the SD card.
You should be able to copy the map you have to the SD card directly ( if there is enough room on it ) , if theres not enough room , get a new bigger card , copy all the backup files you already have on your PC + the map you want. You might / should be then able to activate that map in the XL using the codes you say you have for the maps. if you try to do this using TomTom home it might have some restiction to stop you activating the required map but hopefully you should be able to do it manually as described above rather than use TomTom home. ... GOOD LUCK .
The bongs are usually associated with a selection made in 'preferences' that is to alert you / remind you to drive on the correct side of the road in that country. eg , I have GB maps on my TomTom and also have Western Europe . When I change from the GB map ( we drive on the left ) to the Western Europe Map ( when going on holiday to Spain ) the TomTom will ask me if I need ' alerts ' to remind me to drive on the other side ( Spain drives on right ) . From time to time and especially where I have been in a petrol station or deviated slightly from the route , the TomTom will bong 3 times as a reminder to me . Very Good , isn't it ?
Anyway , it sounds to me from your description that you have this alert turned on.
