My outdoor patio heater stops working after I let go of the control that was pushed in the fire lit but once I released the knob it went out

all heaters work on a pilot system, a thermocouple, to sense pilot, check to see if it is bad, you should be able to buy a universal thermocouple at home depot, or lowes

No Flame

It could be dirty nozzle or dirty line
Unscrew every thing in the nozzle and control valve section and clean gas line and reinstall and try it

Pilot on my patio heater will not stay lit. goes out when i release the knob

If the heater is the same as this type of patio heater and it lights on pilot and goes out it is generally a worn thermocouple. These are designed to switch off the patio heater when something is wrong, changing one fixed 90% of the problems. Sometimes it can also be caused by a worn tilt switch but always start with the most likley and work backwards. Found this site very useful, patio heater problem solving page.

Patio Heater pilot lights won't stay lit

crappy pilot flame (not properly heating the thermocouple), bad thermocouple, thermocouple loose where it screws into the pilot safety valve, bad safety valve magnet.

One or more of those is the problem.

Oh...there is also a saftey switch...in case it tips over. It will also cause the pilot to not stay lit (if the switch or wires that go to i are faulty)
