I have central air conditioning in my home. I

I have central air conditioning in my home. I have noticed that the AC continously runs throughout the day and never reaches the set 79 degrees. The AC cycles off during the night and reaches the temperature. What is the problem?

Check to see if the coil is clean and clear of any obstructions on the outside unit. Make sure the sun is not shining on the outside unit, that makes it hard for it to get rid of its heat.

Keeping your whole home cool with central air.


Sometimes it is difficult to keep your home cool in the hot summer months. Also, some areas of your home may still be hot where other areas are too cool. Try this method to keep your home cool evenly throughout. Before you get started make sure your furnace filter is new. This will allow for maximum air flow.

If your living space is a single floor plan:

  1. Turn the air conditioning on
  2. Switch the furnace fan from auto to on.
  3. Measure the temperature in each room.
  4. Close the vents by about half in the cooler rooms
  5. This will force more cool air into the warmer rooms.
  6. Keep adjusting the vents until all the rooms have the same temp.

If your living space is on more than one level:

  1. Turn on the air conditioning.
  2. Switch the furnace fan from auto to on.
  3. On the lowest level of the house close half of the vents that are the closest to the stairs.
  4. This will force more cool air to the top floor where it is usually hotter.
  5. Cool air will sink from the upper floors which will keep the area near the stairs cool.
  6. Measure the temperature in all the rooms.
  7. Keep adjusting the vents until you have a nice even temperature throughout the house.
I found that leaving the furnace fan on all the time will keep your home evenly cool and comfortable. You may have to replace your furnace filter once a month due to the increased air flow. It will be well worth it in a cooler, more comfortable, and more energy efficient home.

Ductless Split Air Conditioner Review


Ductless split air conditioning units are the very best thing for some situations. Of course they can be installed in the place of most any central air conditioning unit. They also are a very good alternative to window air conditioning units. I will explore the use of these units more closely and look at how they can be used effectively.
One of the many problems encountered by the professional is when they are asked to install central air conditioning in an older home that was never designed with air conditioning as even a possibility. The walls may be very thick stone. Often they have very little or no insulation. The floor structures may be rough cut lumber. The joists spacing may be random. Walls and ceilings are plaster and lathe. Basically everything is stacked against any type of ducted central air conditioning. Many log style homes also are not very easy to get any kind of ducted central air conditioning installed. The open ceilings and the bare log wall design does not allow for any kind of ducting. I'm sure there are other situations. These are the ones that I have come across most frequently.
If you have a home or building that falls into one of these categories you may want to investigate installing a ductless air conditioner. This type of air conditioner can be installed in almost any home or building. The small indoor unit can be attached to the wall with a few screws. Most of the units only require that a three inch hole be bored through the outside wall. In new installations the units can be placed on inside walls with some fore thought and planning. For installation in older homes or homes that are already built you will want to plan the units to be on the outside walls.
The outdoor condenser units can be placed up to one hundred feet away from the indoor units. One outdoor unit can be used for many indoor units. Up to four indoor units can be attached to the same outdoor condenser. Some very advanced electronics will control the operation of the condenser and compressor to supply the refrigerant to the indoor air handler units that are running at the time. With variable speed technology the compressor and the condenser fan will only run as fast as needed. This technology has become very efficient in the last few years. You do not have to give up any efficiency with these ductless split units.
Another advantage to these mini split air conditioners is that they can be controlled to run only in the rooms that you actually need air conditioning in. If you are not going to be in a room you can shut down the unit. The units also have timers that can be set to turn the air conditioning on or off at preset times. If you are not going to be home all day the air conditioning can be setback or turned off. The timer will turn on the air conditioning so that you return to a cool house. Central air conditioning is very hard to zone effectively. Also with large central air conditioning systems the outdoor compressor will be running at full capacity even though only a few rooms amy be calling for cooling. There are some central air conditioning systems that are do some staging and variable speed technology. These are not as efficient or as effective as the ductless split technology.
Ductless split heatpumps are another great idea to look at. For a few dollars more you can also very easily have heat from your air conditioning mini split. Then especially in the mild spring and fall weather you can have some very efficient heat with out starting up that big monster of a furnace or boiler in the basement. In southern climates the heatpump version of the ductless split system may provide enough heat year around.
Ductless split air conditioning is definitely something that can solve many problems for some homeowners. Add to that the many advantages of these units and you will find that they are worth every penny that you will invest into them. As with any project like this make sure that you screen your contractor. These units are not for do it yourself people. There are many things that need to be done correctly for these units to work properly and efficiently. A refrigeration license is also required to install these air conditioners.
By doing a little research and hiring the right person you will enjoy many years of trouble free service from your new ductless mini split system.

That is pretty much normal. When the AC engages it's compressor it triggers the idle sensor to increase idle to compensate for the huge load that an AC unit puts on a vehicle. If your AC is producing cold air, approx. 40 degrees on high, then it should be ok. Power loss is all part of the program with AC. It takes much more noticeable power to run an AC unit on a vehicle, and especially a 4 cylinder. Ever see your house lights dim a bit when you turn on the Home AC central air? :.) Every item under your hood connected to your engine steals power from the engine. The AC is the king of all takers of power.

If you are using this inside your home with central air running do you have to vent it to an outside window?


Yes, it must be vented to the outside, even if you're using central AC, too. The reason being is if you don't vent it to the outside, the hot air and humidity that normally goes thru the duct and out the window, will stay in the house and your Central AC will have to run longer and harder to overcome this rise in heat and humidity. In addition, the room that the portable AC is in, will get extremely hot & humid.

Let me explain in layman's terms how the air conditioning (AC) system works and what could be happening to your car.

Like your body, the air conditioning compressor is the heart of the AC system, and Freon is the blood. The compressor pumps Freon throughout the AC system, either the older type R12 which costs as much as gold it seems these days, or the new environmentally-friendly R134A Freon. This Freon is a gas and liquid combination that is compressed and circulated throughout the air conditioning system. The compressed Freon is pushed through the system under pressure and is passed through different sized metal and rubber hoses and a special valve called an expansion valve that cause the gas to expand and contract.

This expansion and contraction makes the Freon gas very cold. This cold gas makes its way via metal lines into the dash area of your vehicle to the evaporator core. This evaporator core is like a small radiator, except it has cold Freon circulating inside and not hot antifreeze. A small fan (the AC blower fan which you control from the control panel on the dash) sits in front of the evaporator core and blows air across this cold evaporator and then through the vents inside your vehicle.

The other objective of the air conditioning system is to remove the heat from inside the cab of the vehicle. This heat is removed by the Freon with the help of the AC condenser located at the front of the car (usually in front of the radiator). The Freon coming back from the evaporator carries the heat from the cab to the condenser via rubber and metal hoses. Just like your radiator, the condenser is lightweight aluminum with many internal winding coils.
The Freon travels through these coils, and in between these coils are small slits or fins that the Freon is forced through. The condenser will have an electric cooling fan mounted in front or behind it to push or pull air through these fins to remove the heat from the Freon. Some vehicles still use the old fashioned fan blade driven by the engine to pull air across the radiator and the condenser.
Now I know that is just a tidbit of information on how the air conditioning system works, and it is very general, but I wanted you to know what to look for to give you insight as to what might be happening with your vehicle.
A few causes of low cooling efficiency or no cooling at all at idle are:

Lack of air flow across the condenser. Make sure the electric cooling fan motor near the condenser is coming on, or in models that are equipped with a fan blade make sure this fan is turning and is turning very fast.

Low Freon levels. Freon level and pressure should be checked by your certified air conditioning mechanic.

Overheating. If the engine is running hot or overheating, it can have a noticeable negative affect on the air conditioning system. Some cars have two electric cooling fans, one for the air conditioning condenser and the other for the radiator. Make sure they are both working properly. Usually at idle on a hot day with the AC on both fans will be on.

When the vehicle is traveling at freeway speeds, the compressor is pumping the Freon throughout the system much faster and harder than at idle. There is a dramatic increase in air flow across the condenser due to 55 mph winds, and the engine is usually operating at a cooler, more efficient temperature as well, thus allowing the air conditioning system to operate efficiently.
Note: An air conditioning system that is somewhat low on Freon can still feel comfortable at freeway speeds due to the added air flow across the condenser which can overcome the ill effects of slightly low Freon. Periodic air conditioning performance checks by your mechanic are the best way to keep the system in great shape.

You can try getting it serviced. Vacuuming the system and charging it up with new refrigerant, as well as replacing the reciever drier, will help tweak your AC system. This is no guarantee though. It might be able to bring the temp in your house down several more degrees. Also try cleaning the condenser outside. You can spray it with water to clean off dirt which block air from passing through. This hepls a bit and you can do it yourself.
