All Xbox 360 system updates should update automatically when you power on your system or notify you of game/app updates upon selection of said game/app. First make sure your Xbox is connected to the internet and that it is working properly by running the network setup found in the guide menu. After running the setup and everything checks out restart your Xbox and see if an update message appears. If not there are 2 possibilities, 1 your Xbox is already up to date and no action is required and 2 you may have an update error that the following link should be able to help you perform a manual update. You must update. Xbox requires it for proper functioning in the xbox kinect system. This enables the xbox to recognize your kinect camera and adds more features. So you not updating it wont let it work. Its the way Xbox companies makes their money.

Just connect to Xbox Live if you are able. You dont need a gold account to get system updates. Another option is to download a system update and burn it to a CD/DVD or a flash drive. Then you can put that in the Xbox and it will update. I believe some games come with system updates (I'm not sure which).

Check to see if your xbox 360 is connected to the internet. If your xbox is connected to the internet and still is not allowing you to update check your xbox setting. Sometimes your parental control on xbox 360 can stop you from updating your xbox. If all else fails try to take your hard drive off the xbox and reset your console to factory settings

Alternatively, you can download the update on your computer and either burn the file to a CD/DVD or drop the file onto a Memory Stick and put that into the Xbox to run the update. Getting the update free on Xbox LIVE is the best option because your console will be automatically updated as new system software is released.
To update your Xbox 360 console on Xbox LIVE, you must have an Xbox LIVE account with either a Gold or Silver membership, and a broadband Ethernet connection.
To update on Xbox LIVE: Connect your Xbox 360 console to your broadband connection. If your console is not connected already, see Connect to Xbox LIVE. Note Your console will be restarted when you join Xbox LIVE, so be sure to save your game progress. Create an Xbox LIVE membership or add one to your offline profile, if you haven't already. If you don't have an Xbox LIVE account or have a slow Internet connection, using a USB flash drive is a good option.
Note: The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system.
Update using a USB flash drive:
Connect your USB flash drive to a USB port on your computer. Click here to begin downloading the update folder. Save it as "$SystemUpdate9199.zip" anywhere on your computer. Unzip the File. Copy the contents from the unzipped folder onto the root of your flash drive. Safely remove the flash drive from your computer and plug it into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console. Your other option is to download a file from Xbox.com and burn a DVD or CD. Use this method if you don't have your console connected to broadband, or if you use a dialup connection to the Internet. You could even do this at a friend's house who has a broadband Internet connection and a DVD or CD burner.
To create an update disc you need the following:
A DVD or CD burner. A blank, writeable DVD or CD. The update file from Xbox.com. This procedure involves burning the DVD or CD by using Microsoft Windows DVD or CD burning software. If you're using third-party CD/DVD writing software, follow the instructions for creating a data disc.
The same steps apply whether burning a CD or a DVD.
To create a DVD or CD:

Open (double click) the zipped $SystemUpdate.zip folder and drag the contents of the zipped folder to the root of the CD Folder. Note If you are using an earlier version of Windows you will need to open the file using a separate utility (for example, WinZip). In the Explorer window, click Write files to CD from the CD writing tasks or right-click the CD/DVD RW drive and select Write these files to CD. Caution The update filename and folder structure must be intact for the update to run properly. Follow the steps in the CD wizard. When you are finished with the wizard, the CD will eject. Your CD is ready. To update the console:
Place the CD in the Xbox 360 console.
Power cycle the Xbox 360 console. The update program will start automatically. Select Yes, update now and press A. Wait for the update to complete. When the console reboots, you're done. If this does not work then you need to sand your xbox in to microsoft.

The easiest option to update the Xbox 360 hard drive is to connect to Xbox Live. The console will automatically prompt the user to install any available updates. Alternatively, users can download the update files to a USB flash drive to transfer to the Xbox 360 hard drive.

Update via Xbox Live

Open the Xbox 360 dashboard menu. This menu automatically appears when the console is turned on. Press the "Xbox" button, followed by the "Y" button to return to the dashboard menu from a game.

Scroll up to the "My Xbox" tab of the dashboard menu.

Select "System Settings" from the "My Xbox" section of the dashboard. Scroll to the right while the "My Xbox" tab is selected to reach the "System Settings" icon.

Select "Network Settings" from the "System Settings" menu.

Select "Test Xbox Live Connection" from the network settings. A prompt will appear to update the Xbox 360 hard drive if your system is not already updated to the latest version.

Select "Yes, update now" to install the latest updates to your Xbox 360 hard drive.


Updating via USB Flash Drive

Copy the update files onto the root directory of your USB flash drive. You can download the Xbox 360 update files by going to download.microsoft.com/download/1/d/8/1d8c09be-278e-41cd-98be-eb9188128227/$systemupdate9199.zip. You must extract the files from the .zip file before placing them on the USB drive. The update files cannot be placed into a folder or the Xbox 360 system will not recognize them.

Remove the flash drive from your computer.

Insert the flash drive into the USB port on the Xbox 360 console.


Turn on the Xbox 360. An update prompt will appear when the system powers up.

Select "Yes, update now" to update the Xbox 360 hard drive.

xbox now does not update for just the xbox all updates are for the 360, if you are trying to update it might be trying to update the 360, make sure it is the right update
