IS IT AN ABOVEGROUND OR SUBMERSIBLE (INGROUND) PUMP. USUALLY THIS IS CAUSED BY A BAD CAPACITOR OR BURNT POINTS ON THE PRESSURE SWITCH. THE CAPACITOR IS EITHER IN A RELAY BOX AT THE WELL OR IN THE MOTOR CASING. HOPE THIS HELPS. JODY

When my pump did this, it was burnt contacts on the motor start switch. This switch is located on the end of the motor shaft inside the metal cover on the back end of the pump motor. It is designed to be closed when the pump is off, connecting the starting capacitor to the motor windings. When the motor gets up to about half speed, the switch is supposed to open, disconnecting the starting capacitor. If the contacts are burnt or if the unit is worn, sometimes the switch does not close as it should, and the motor will just hum and not start.

Can these parts (capacitor or burnt points) be purchased and replaced or does one just have to buy a new motor?

  • Bob Butcher Jan 16, 2011

I got it working at least for now. I cleaned the contacts with a fine file, which is not recommended since they are plated. Then I had to adjust the contact spacing by tightening the mounting bolt enough to collapse the U shaped metal spacer. The original problem was that the parts had worn to the point that the contacts were barely touching when the motor was off. I found instructions on adjusting the switch on the internet.

New starting capacitors are cheap and easy to find. The motor starting contacts on the other hand are a bit pricey. I have found several sources ranging in price from about $60 to about $90, which is a lot considering that a new motor can be had for under $200.

WHY IS MY FRIGIDAIRE FRONT LOAD WASHER MAKING ODD NOISE AND NOT SPINNING?

Hello Friend, thank you for your post!

Often when a washer does not spin, it is because your washer cannot properly drain and dispose of the water and detergent solution. Does your washer make a humming noise? If so, the drainage hose/pump may be clogged and needs to be cleaned. If not, your washer may possibly be experiencing an issue with the door lock assembly, faulty pump, timer or control board not communicating correctly. Because it could be a number of any one of several underlying causes, I would recommend contacting a professional to properly diagnose and repair washer.

Best regards! - Z

EIFLS55IIW The washer is humming and starts to

Hello Chad, I am happy to assist you. Often when a unit does not complete a cycle, it is because the unit cannot properly drain and dispose of the water and detergent solution. Since the unit is making a humming noise, there is a possibility that the drainage hose/pump may be clogged and needs to be cleaned. If not, the washer may possibly be experiencing an issue with the door lock assembly, faulty pump, timer or control board not communicating correctly. The burnt smell can be due to a faulty potential wiring failure. Because it could be a number of any one of several underlying causes, I would recommend contacting a professional to properly diagnose and repair the unit.

Washer wont drain

Hello shirley_dods - Is the washer making a humming noise? If so, either the drain hose or pump is clogged and needs cleaning. Try setting the cycle to spin cycle only. Will water pump out? If it does not, then the washer could possibly be experiencing a communication error with the control board, faulty pump, timer or door lock assembly. At this point, I recommend connecting with a professional to accurately pinpoint any potentially more serious issues.
