Dell 8400 dead

Can you tell if your hard drive is running? You can here it or feel it spinning. Are the fans running? If no, I'm 99% sure you need to replace your power supply and/or motherboard. This kind of thing usually happens after a power surge.

Dimension 3100 turns on the power button has a steady orange light there is also an orange light on motherboard cpu and power suplly fans working but wont bot up

Blinking amber (orange) indicates a problem with the power supply inside the computer. If the system cannot boot and there is a solid amber light, this could indicate a problem with the power connections for the CPU on the system board (see "Power Problems" in your Owner's Manual).

My dell GX 270 computer has amber mother board light,No display, processor fan runs, power supply fan rotates.

hi ansilesh

If the power light is steady amber - The computer is receiving
electrical power, but an internal power problem might exist.
Ensure that the microprocessor power cable is securely connected to the
system board.
it might also be a failed mainboard already since you are experiencing a blackout.

hope this helps

I put in a dynex 400 wps power supply a couple of years ago and it has been working fine. Got a wireless keyboard and mouse for xmas installed it and now get a steady amber power light and the blue hard...

Solid AMber power LED indicates a failure of the motherboard or an item connected connected to the motherboard. Disconnect all external connections except power and see if the indication changes. If yes, re-connect one at a time till the fault is found. If no, remove all PCI Expansion cards, see if any change, if yes, again try them one at a time till issue ID'd
If issue still occurs, failure is most likely the motherboard

I got the steady Amber light of Death in my dell.

As a hardware repair technician at a local university, I have seen the amber power light problem on quite a few Dell computers. If the machine is in warranty, Dell insists the power supply be the first thing replaced, even if it tests ok. If that does not do it, then they send me a new motherboard. Of the dozens of machines that have had this problem, only 1 of them needed a new motherboard. The power supply alone resolved the problem on all the rest. I have found this to be true on out-of-warranty systems as well.

Computer will not turn on

  • Blinking Amber/yellow: Initial state of LED at power up.
Indicates system has power, but the POWER_GOOD signal is not yet active.
If the hard drive LED is off, it is probable that the power supply needs to be replaced.
If the hard drive LED is on, it is probable that an onboard regulator or VRM has failed.

Solid amber light on front amber on mother board

Hello,
take the PSU (Power Supply Unit) from a known working computer, preferable to be the same model and test with it. when you do so make sure you disconnect any peripherals e.g ( Printer, CD-ROM, Floppy).

Look closely at the memory bay for any bent pins, and test with one memory at the time.

Let me know if this is still an issue.

Regards

Dell Dimension 4600 Won't Boot Up, Steady Amber Light is on tower

I have seen with some of the small form factor dell's that there can be a motherboard problem; my expirence with the regular towers and the steady amber light have been power supplies. I have a dimension 9100 that is three years old now and I am on my fourth power supply. I am not sure that you would have one laying around, but in my past expirence its been teh power supply. On the ones that I have seen where it was the motherboard you could clearly see on the chipset where it was damaged from heat (it was burnt). Hope that helps
