Question about Freezers

Older model, motor funs, but does not cool the chest

How can I find out how old freezer is? Bought used from a friend who has used it for years. Now the motor runs, but it does not freeze. It was laid on its back for moving. Is this worth calling the repairman ($65 to walk in the door--ok, but want an idea what might be wrong.)

thanks for the reply, renaldo. I have already looked for any information on the model/mfg date/serial date plate on the back of unit--nothing helpful. Also, there is no listing of freon type. So, probably this means the unit is pretty old and that was not required then. As for what is running, can't tell. I ran the freezer for 24 hours when I first got it and it did not run continuously. It would shut off after awhile. I think it is probably not worth getting fixed if it is over 20 years old. Your comment? (I definitely will accept your solution so you will get paid.)

Well one way to find out is to look on the back. It shows all the info including what kind of freon to use. Usually the manufacturing date is on there. If not see if it uses 134 for refrigerant. This would at least indicate it is not really old. 134 was introduced in the late 90s. replacing R12. If you meant the compressor run but do not freeze, unplug it because the compressor can be damaged if it run without refrigerant for long period of time. If you meant the fan in the freezer was running, the compressor might not be running at all thats why it is not getting cold. This could be caused by the breaker switch on it not resetting anymore. It may have a leak it too, and all the refrigerant has leaked out. If it operates on 134, you can buy a line tap, 134 adapter availabe in auto parts store or walmart. Buy you some freon in the can. A propane torch, solder, and some flux. If you have a friend who is handy, or a mechanic. They can do it for you much cheaper. One does not need refrigeration license to work on refrigerators. Only the know how. I can give them instructions. Last note. a fridge usually take 1/2 to 3/4 can of 134.

It looks like a bad ignition switch or capacitor. This is not that expensive. Probably not the compressor. Unfortunately, one small part stops the whole show.have a friend who is a tech look at it.

Used Kenmore freezer won't get cold enough

If it is running but not cooling enough the problem is in the sealed system.

If you started it up just after hauling it home it may have be moved around enough to get oil in the systems smaller tubing causing problems. Unplug the unit for 24 hours and let it sit. Try it again for 24 hours and see if it cools.

If not this means either there is a refrigerant (freon) leak in the system or a restriction causing the refrigerant to not flow properly.

Either one are an expensive repair. and will require a professional to look at.

Chest Freezer not cooling

Please don't rate this solution, as anything but FixYa brings my rating down, but here's what you've got:
You have a refrigerant leak (commonly referred to a Freon, but these days usually R134A refrigerant). Some refrigerant has leaked, so you are still getting some cooling, but there is not enough refrigerant left to cool throughout the entire evaporator coils. This is NOT a repairable condition, as the coils are foamed in place and not accessable for leak repair. If this unit is under 5 years old (typical sealed system warranty) the manufacturer will most likely replace your freezer with a new one. If over 5 years, you are out of luck. Buy a replacement freezer.

Hi ndntwiggy,
Ngafm at your service

Your said, your freezer is about 2 years old, but has been in storage for about a year and a half.
And the green light comes on, and the motor is running, but it will not get cold or even cool.

When a compressor is not run for more than a year, or 2 years there is a possibility that the seals dried out from non use and the freon leaked out.
Compressors have oil in them that when run even once a month will lubricate the seals and keep them soft and moist! .
Just like in the older cars from the 1960's or 70's the air conditioners had to be run once a month even in the winter to keep the seals lubricated or they lost the freon!
Then they started to make the defroster turn the compressor on as to lubricate the seals every time it rained or snowed and you needed the defrosters and this serviced the compressor as in todays cars.!
So you need service to fix it and more than likely it's out of freon refrigerant .
Let me know your end results.
