Line spool won't come off Toro Model 1100

I can't get the spool off. There is a tab on each side of the spool and I think you're supposed to push them in, but I tried that and it won't come off.

SOURCE: refill line on spool of toro electric model 910

Onve you remove the cover the spool should pull straight out. Be careful, there's a spring under the spool that can fly out and get lost. You need that spring to re-assemble.

SOURCE: I have a Toro 12 inch Toro Electric trimmer and I can't get the spool off to change. Any solution?

I am having the same problem - the spool should just come off by turning it counter-clockwise but is completely stuck. This model does not have any tabs that need to be pushed in to get the spool off. Very frustrating!

I have an 11" Toro trimmer and was having trouble deciphering the symbols on the base. The key is having a method to gain some opposing force to unscrew the cap that holds the spool. I have an oil filter wrench called the round wrench. It is a steel bar with an attached length of rubber belt that can tighten around cylindrical objects. I used that to oppose the unlock direction on the trimmer and "voila", no tabs to push no trick with the button, you just need o_1089.jpg_1088.jpg_1087.jpgpposing force.

  1. Pull the spark plug wire from the top of the spark plug. Bend the wire to the side to prevent accidental starting.
  2. Place trimmer on its side with the trimmer spool head facing you. Press the two tabs on the side of the spool head with your fingers.
  1. Hold side of the head and slowly allow the head cover to push away from the inside of the spool head. There is a spring between the spool head housing and the spool that pushes out when releasing the cover.
  1. Pll the knob and spool out of the spool head. The spring should come out on the back of the spool.

All I know to help you would be parts replacement as plastic parts are wear items and have to be replaced. Here is a parts w/diagrams breakdown of the 1981 model year Toro 1100 trimmer. I hope this can be of help. You can order parts here to replace your "worn out" string head and spool.

With most trimmers, you may have to push the spool casing inward and then turn. It should unlock fairly easy. You may also want to spray the divider crease on the spool casing with some kind of lubricant like WD-40 or Tri-Flow to facilitate the process of detaching the spool casing from the body. Good luck. I hope this helps.

How to replace pull cord

You didn't give a specific model, but on most briggs & stratton engines (which most toro mowers use) the recoil starter is in an assembly which is spot welded onto a metal cover. You may have to first remove a plastic shroud (which might include the gas tank - which should have a shut-off valve). Then you should be able to remove the metal cover that includes the recoil starter. When you get that off you will see a plastic spool that holds the cord. This spool is probably held in place by a couple of metal tabs that are bent down. Bend those tabs up with pliers. Underneath the spool is a spiral spring that provides the recoil. Take careful note of how this all goes together. Buy a new cord (available by the foot at a hardware store) and wrap it around the plastic spool. Use a piece of tape to hold the end of the new cord above the spool so you can thread it through the hole in the metal housing later. Put the spring and the spool in place, then wind the spool to put tension on the spring - about 5 turns in the direction that would push the string out through the hole. Once you have the spring "wound up" remove the tape and thread the end of the cord through the hole. Now bend those metal tabs back down. Put the handle on the cord end (or tie a knot) to keep the spring from pulling the end of the cord back through the hole. Reassemble the rest and you are in business.

Do not know how to correctly string so string will come out as it is supposed to on my poulan pro weedeater, do not have directions

There are five ways to change trimmer line depending upon the style of trimmer head on your unit.

The first style has a locking tab on the side of the trimmer head that must be depressed while the lock ring is turned counter-clockwise. This will remove the cover and give access to the spool which can then be pulled out, rewound with the line (winding in the direction of the arrows on the spool), and re-installed.

The second style requires lining up the marks on the bottom of the spool tap/button assembly and firmly pulling straight out on the tap button. This pulls the spool assembly out so it can be re-wound and inserted back into the hub assembly.

The third style requires pushing in and down on the two locking tabs on the side of the trimmer head. This will remove the cover and give you access to the spool.

The fourth style of trimmer head is the Centrex. Remove the cap on the bottom of the head by unscrewing it. Remove the guide ring and remove the spool from the unit. Cut a 25ft length of line and insert one end into the center cavity of the empty spool. Feed the line into the spool, leaving 4-6 inches unwound from the center of the spool. Reinstall the spool, guide and cap, making sure the notch in the guide is facing away from the spool and the line is in the notch.

The fifth style is the fixed line cutting head. This style cutting head uses a pre-cut piece of cutting line. After removing the worn line from the cutting head, insert the precut piece into the positioning tunnel leaving an equal amount out each side of the tunnel. The ends of the line can then be inserted through the exit tunnels.

It has come apart and I would like to refill the line on my toro heavy duty electric trimmer

Cut two separate pieces of string, about 7 ft. each.

Stick the end of the line in the hole on the inside of spool.

Wind clockwise onto spool, putting the line that is closest to the ground on first.

Once you have winded this piece on, lock the last 4 inches of line through the slits on spool.

Repeat process for second piece of line, locking the last 4 inches in slot opposite the other locked in piece.

Put the spool on the trimmer, feeding the end of lines through either hole on trimmer.

Before you push the spool all the way on, pull the strings out of the locked position.
