Kenmore washer dial not working

kenmore washing machine model #110.82980120 - dial that you turn to start wash cycle does not reliably turn. It clicks a little then stops and spins. Do I just need to replace the dial or is there something underneath, mechanical, that has to be replaced? thank you!
