First of all, unplug your washer. You will need to remove the console in order to get to the lid switch. The washer may have release tabs under the console at each front corner. Simply slide a putty knife straight in from the front at each corner and push in while lifting up. You should feel the release tabs push in and the console will pop up. If not equipped with this type of console, you may have a console that has removable end caps. They can be removed by gently prying up on the top of them from the rear on each side. You may have to use a small screwdriver for this. The caps should pop right off. Once removed, you will need to loosen a screw under each cap. Once you have the console loosened, carefully lift it up and lay it back over the rear panel of the washer in its resting position. Be careful not to damage the small plastic hinges that hold it in place. Now you will need to perform the following steps:

1. Under the console you will find the lid switch connector. Unplug the switch from the connector.

2. There will be two brass colored clips. You will need to remove these to remove the machine casing. Place a flat blade screwdriver straight down into the opening on top of the washer and into the groove of the clip. Push the screwdriver away from you while holding into the groove and the clip will release.

3. Open the lid of the washer and place your hand under the front rim of the opening (DO NOT grab the wash tub). Now pull the case from the frame by lifting from the back first.

You do not have to remove it all the way from the frame, just enough to gain access to the switch. All there is to the switch is a couple of screws holding it in and a ground wire. It's a pretty easy repair job. Some models will have the switch located on the right-hand side of the lid rim opening, while other models will have the switch located on the left-hand side near the lid hinge.

Once you've completed your switch installation, make sure you get the case back on the frame correctly by following these steps:

1. While looking down through the lid opening, place the front lip of the machine case UNDER the washer frame and start leaning it back onto the frame. There are four small cleats that must fit into four slots on the case or the washer will vibrate. Make sure the frame is seated properly, lean forward from the front of the washer, grasp both sides of the rear panel and pull towards the case. The rear panel should be seated and flush with the casing before inserting the retaining clips.

2. Insert the brass-colored clips into the slot on the washer rear panel first, and then push straight down into the opening on the top of the washer with some force. If you have the case seated correctly, the clips will snap back in.

3. Make sure you plug the connector from the console back into the lid switch receptacle BEFORE you reassemble the console. This is easy to forget.

I have kenmore 80 series heavy duty/ super capacity plus washer that after it fills with water, hot or cold and it starts the wash cycle, I noticed that the agitator only moves once in awhile and stops

hum either a bad timer sticking the point contacts close. have u tried this in all cycles? and possibly a motor with bad windings not enough power to run agitation? try running in mild or gentle and see what happens? I was tempted to say the cam dogs in agitator but they dont work then stop then work, when they go out they go out.

70 Series Kenmore Washer Agitates in Heavy Duty regardless of switch selection

Yours is a 2 speed motor. Does it spin in 2 different speeds. If so, then it most likely is designed with only to agitate in 1 speed. If it only spins in one speed, then your motor is defective

Washer filled with water but has stopped and will not adgetate or spin

next time send the model number.check the lid switch.set it on spin, close the lid and then open it a few inches,do this a few times repeatedly,if you don't hear a clicking sound when the lid opens and closes the switch is bad,you can try sticking a screw driver into the hole on the top right side to see if it will spin,no clicking sound when you push down on the switch the switch is bad,or you can pop up the top console, you might have to remove the corner covers to get at the screws, when the screws are removed push in the timer so no power is going to the machine, set it on spin, lift the console up and you'll see two clips,on the right side you'll see a white wire harness connection, that's the lid switch, disconnect the harness,it plugs into the top of the washer on the right side, when it's apart, stick a jumper wire into the two outside holes of the harness that you removed from the lid switch, the middle hole is the ground, when you have the wire pushed into the two outside holes pull the timer out and if it starts to spin then you know it's the lid switch.let it drain out the water then push in the timer knob to shut it down remove the jumper wire and get a new lid switch, when you have it pop the two mtal clips and then you can pull the frame off of the washer to get at the switch.if you send me the model number i can look up your washer and give you the part number or you can call your parts store, give them the model number and they will sell you the correct part.good luck with your washer.if the motor runs but it's doing this you could have broke the motor coupling, let me know what problem you find and i will send you a video to help you change out the lid switch or coupling.

Machine not spinning

where lids closes on top of washer is a little hole. on bottom of lid is a peg that goes into that hole. try first pushing lid down hard to see if makes contact, if not that switch if does not make a click sound when depressing, most likely is out, can easily be replaced, and can do yourself. swich is maybe 20 bucks, that swich is a safety switch, to not allow washer to spin unless lid is closed, to prevent injury to a child sticking hand in when spinning.

Greetings,
check for a faint click when you close the lid..if you hear no click, paying close attention for sound..the lid switch is most likely bad..on some models..it prevents machine from spinning, but lets it wash..there is a way to get it to spin by hooking switch up direct...this is only good for checking as its a safety feature...raise console after UNPLUGGING and you will see a small block with three wires coming out of cabinet at right corner ...there will be a plug that goes into this with three wires and it comes off by holding a little tab and pulling it off. its this block that you want to make bypass..do not use the green wire as its ground, but make bypass beteen other two wires and it should drain and spin. make sure you tape this with electrical tape and purchase a new lid switch.

Top Loader stopped during spin cycle and now won't work

The lid switch cuts off power to the washer and will cause the washer to stop and not to start at all when it fails or when the lid switch strike breaks. Check the lid switch strike located on the middle right side of the lid. Replace the lids witch strike if it is broken with part number 3950298.

Push and hold the lid switch, using a screwdriver, through the hole on the right side recess of the top cover and start the washer. The lid switch actually clicks when activated.

Check the continuity of the lid switch when activated if the washer still doesn't start when the lid switch is pushed and held. Disconnect power to the washer prior to servicing to avoid the risk of electric shock.

Remove the screws at the front bottom corners of the console then slightly pull the console forward to clear the console tabs from the slots on the cabinet, and then flip the console to the rear of the washer.

Disconnect the wiring harness connecting the timer to the lid switch wiring harness connector on the cabinet then using an ohmmeter, check the continuity of the lid switch while it is being pushed. Set the ohmmeter to XR1 then touch the test leads to the right and left terminals of the lid switch connector. Replace the lid switch when the resistance reads open.

Check your lid switch.

If the washer fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain, this is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug.

If the switch is not activated by a lid strike, it will activated by a hinge actuator located next to either the left or right lid hinge. You will need to remove the operator console in order to access this type of switch. NOTE: On this type of lid switch the lid hinge has a small rod that is used as an acutator to toggle the switch. In many cases, you can adjust the rod by bending it if the switch is not making contact.

If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

A replacement switch can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all of them for the best price.

This is a very simple repair, that usually costs about $25 to $35 to repair yourself. If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
