Dell computer cant get the cd rom drive to reconize the cd;s

    The D drive won't read or write. The program says that is is running properly.

    Our D Drive won't read or burn. We have XP Professional 5100 Dimension. It worked one day and then bang nothing.

Could be a dirty sensor. Get a can of air and try to blow it out. Might need to try that a couple of times. Try reloading the drivers for the cd. They sometimes get corrupted.

    Hey! Anyway, back to the problem at hand.

    So your drives don't work. Let's take this from the ground up. There are a limited number of things that will cause a cd reader/burner not to work.
    The cd unit itself, the mechanical/electrical interface between the computer and cd unit,the software drivers that allow the computer to recognise and operate the cd unit, the software package that actually tells the cd unit what it should be doing, and cd media itself.

    1-As to the cd unit itself. It could of course be broken. This doesn't happen too often, but does happen. In that case, the drive would have to be replaced. That might be caused by the lazer going bad, or an actual internal mechanical problem. Additionally, because it uses sensors that may be mechanical or optical, foreign material or dust may cause a problem. And that is where the can of compressed air comes in. Using the air to blow out the cd unit will often resolve that problem.
    2-The mechanical interface may also be the problem. The contacts on the connector may be dirty or damaged. Pulling the cd unit and inspecting the contacts might show any problems in regards to damage. Removing the cd unit for inspection of the connector will also make you reseat the unit when you place it back in the computer. That action alone should take care of any dirt or dust that may have gotten on the contacts.
    3-The software drivers are more commonly the problem. The computer doesn't recognize the drive, or doesn't recognize it properly. This is usually resolved by refreshing the drivers. The drivers are refreshed by removing them and reinstalling them.
    4-An even more common problem seems to lie in the cd drive software package itself. These can get corrupted or be set up incorrectly. This can usually be resolved by deleting and reinstalling the software package. Then, double check to assure yourself that it is set up correctly.
    5-Finally, you would be surprised at how many of these types of failures are caused by using the wrong media type. Double check that the type of cd that you are using is the type that works with your unit. Additionally, verify that the cd that you are inserting is not scratched or damaged.

    If any of the above mentioned 5 items don't fix the problem that you are having, then your drive has a very unusual issue, or is or is possessed.

    Part of the reason that I have revisited this posting is in an effort to assist you guys in getting back up and running. An ulterior motive that I have is to get the "Inappropriate" rating off of my screen. ;o) Inappropriate ratings tell me that I am not doing my job, and I do want to do it right!

My dell latitude c400 will not boot from external cd rom or the brand new hard drive i need to put windows xp on it but it will not boot from anything can you helpnow i have found i have no drivers...


try other known good windows installer. if it boot, then the problem is in xp installer, if it not. try other external cd-rom drive. also be sure the disc rom drive are dvd rom drive because a cd rom drive cannot read dvd disc but a dvd rom drive can read cd rom disc installer

Dont matter what cd i put in the cd rom none of them work and when i go into my computer the cd rom is not reconized



make sure that the cd rom is getting enough consistent power test all leads that are attached to the cd rom including electical extensions and make sure they have a secure connection or just replace them there might be bad/faulty or
your drivers may have been corrupted or you might have a virus run your antivrus program
you might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd rom then plug them back in this will activate found new hardware wizard

you might have to uninstall then reinstall your cd rom or uninstall the driver then reinstall for this device
if this does not fix the problem might be a registry problem
control panel admistrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you can you can update driver,roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer
Close all open programs

Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter
Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

SYSTEM

CurrentControlSet

Control

Class

{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

Upper Filters

Lower Filters

Upper Filters.bak

Lower Filters.bak

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer

Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

My hard drive crashed on my dell optiplex gx 60 i got a new hard drive but now it wont reconize my cd rom so i cant figure out how to install windows

Please try the following

Click on F12 or del tto enter bios setup when you first switch the power on

go through the options until you find Boot sequence

Choose the CD rom drive from there and ensuring the CD is in the drive save the settings and restart this will allow the CD drive to be picked up

I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 that does not reconize my cd/dvd drive. What would be the estimate cost for this repair.


Hello there:
Your drive may not necessarly be bad , what i would do is open the case and switch the ribbon from the harddrive and place it on the cd rom and then place the one that was on the cd rom and put it on the harddrive and boot the computer into the bios and see if the cd rom is now showing up.,
If so good which may mean that the ribbon cable that was originally attached to the cd rom may not be good .
But if still nothing than you can put every thing back the way it was and if the ribbon cable that was attached to the cd rom originally has a extra end to hook up to the cd rom try to use it and see what happnes if still nothing than yes replace the drive they usually run about 30 to 60 dollars ok?

You might have to go to the BIOS of your computer to ensure your drive is recognised. Once it shows there, make sure you change the Drive as your first boot device.

Try cleaning the CD, first. If still a problem, the CD may be bad - try in another computer to test.

OS is Windows XP Professional CD drive will not reconize a DVD+R for recording data. The drive is a HL-D-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4244.


A CDRW/DVD is a CD-burner and DVD-ROM combined unit. It is not meant to record DVDs only CDs.

It will not recognise a blank DVD as it is unable to read any file system.

Drive doesn't play CD-ROM but plays DVD games...


1. go to device manager / right click on cd drive / uninstall driver / reboot and windows will reinstall driver 2. go to My computer right click on cd drive properties - check digital cd playback recording - check enable cd recording on this drive driver - update or uninstall reboot your computer
