If you have the windows xp install disk (or restrore disk), then this will be easy! Just put the disk in, eboot the computer, and see if it comes up with the prompt "press any key to install" if it does, then press any key, and follow the prompts. When it gets to the "hard disk formatting" then press "d" to delete the partition. (You may need to press "l" and "enter" after) This should be easy enough. However, the computer may not start up from the disk, in which case, you will need to access the bios (see instruction manual) and change the boot order so that cd or dvd comes first. I wont provide detailed instructions on how to do the bios stuff, as it differs from computer to computer. (Common keys to press whilst starting up to get into the bios are delete, and all of the "f" keys.)
Hope this solves your problem!

How to wipe a hard drive

Easiest was is to reformat the drive or reinstall your windows OS as a new install. Either way, will reformat the C: drive and wipe all data from the drive. You may have a security program that allows you to shred data. That, too, will work as it actually removes data rather than just removing the indexing files pointing to the date, such as emptying your waste basket does.

Would like to wipe the harddrive clean and reinstall my games etc but do not want to not loose the original drivers and os system I can see the manual but is on the computer i want to do this with. is it...

Surgically removing is teeedious
Leaving just the os and driversJust find your data folders and start purging but watch out ad remove programs can get sticky so with a backup you can dabble all you want.

If you have a restore CD then you can reinstall Windows.
If you have a Windows installation CD then you can use this to reinstall Windows.
Reinstalling Windows will wipe your data from the hard disk.

Going to reset my computer. Where can I find the reset button?

If you're trying to restore the Computer to factory settings, then you can use the VAIO Recovery Center that is shipped with the Computer.

NOTES:
  1. Click the Start button, then click Help and Support . NOTE: If the Help and Support link is not available on the Start menu, re-enable the link in the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window.
  2. In the Windows Help and Support window, click Backup & Recovery .
  3. Under Backup & Recovery , under VAIO Recovery Center , click Launch VAIO Recovery Center .
  4. In the VAIO Recovery Center window, under Choose a program , click to select the desired option: NOTES:
    • It is strongly recommended that recovery discs be created to help restore files if the operating system will not start. Recovery discs are bootable and can be used to perform a recovery on a properly functioning hard drive.
    • The Windows Backup and Restore option opens the Backup and Restore Center provided with the Windows Vista® operating system. This provides the ability to save information from the hard drive, such as personal data files, and restore previously backed up data.
    • Computer problems related to hardware can be diagnosed using the VAIO Hardware Diagnostics option.
    • One or more drivers or factory-installed applications may be reinstalled with the Reinstall Programs or Drivers option.
    • The entire (C:) drive can be restored to its original, factory-installed condition by selecting Restore C: Drive .
    • Choosing Restore Complete System will restore the entire (C:) drive, while removing or restoring the Recovery Drive partition. Modifying the size of the hard drive partitions is also an option with this type of recovery. This option requires you to insert Recovery DVDs created using the Create Recovery Discs option.
    • To remove all data from the hard drive, including the operating system, all programs and personal data, choose the Wipe and Erase Data option. This option is provided for the convenience of advanced users who want to install a different operating system, and who want to ensure all data has been removed from the hard drive first. All other users are strongly urged to avoid selecting this option.

I am selling my laptop as i have a new one and would like to wipe it clean.

Format the Hard drive 2 or 3 times to make sure you have deleted ALL info there, and then install the Winders.
Or maybe choose one of the many flavours of Linux to install.
I run Ubuntu Linux and can recommend that.. You can find it here.. http://www.ubuntu.com/

Whats the highest cpu i can use in 217843 001 motherboard

Hi There, if you want a higher CPU, it will cost you as much as the computer. If you would like higher CPU, copy the files off the old computer, then, try to sell it on the internet. When a buyer picks up for a high price, and pays, wipe the hard drive with a data wiping program, reinstall windows, then send it to him. The, use the money to get a new, higher CPU laptop.

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 that I am preparing to sell. I tried to use Dell PC Restore (Control, F-11) to get the computer back to the way it was when I purchased it, and delete my files. The system...

How you wipe the drive depends on what state you want the PC to be in when you sell it. Some of the Dell drivers may be needed for things like video, chipsets, the hard drive(s), modem (if equipped), the CD/DVD drives, sound, etc.

You can wipe the drive and just leave the operating system, then re-boot and see what the operating system finds and needs to install drivers for. That's where you'll need the Dell discs.

Then go to "My Computer", right-click the icon, choose Properties, click the hardware tab and click the Device Manager tab. Check the list of installed devices and if you have any question marks or explamation points. If you do, you may need to install additional drivers for those devices or get them from the vendor on the internet.

A government wipe can be 1 pass, 3 pass, 7 pass DoD, Schneier, or 35 pass Gutmann (takes a long time).

I usually wipe the drive, re-format it, re-install the operating system and drivers and then sell it. This is also a good time to open the case and blow all the dirt out of it. Don't do this in the house - it can make a mess.
