Sounds like a few issues. The check engine light should come on when you turn the key to "ON" without attempting to start it. If it doesn't, the bulb could be bad and that would mean removing the instrument cluster to change the bulb.
The rough idle issue could be a partially stuck open EGR valve. Remove the valve and clean it good. While you have it out make sure the diaphragm moves freely. Replace the valve if you can't clean it or if it doesn't move.
Go to your local auto parts store and ask them to read the codes (most store provide this as a free service).

p0340 is the cam shaft sensor, this will cause it to cut off while driving, hardtime starting, p0351 is the ignition coil A primary/secondary curcuit mal function. p1391 is ignition system misfire, this could be plugs, wires, or coils. first of all have the cam sensor changed and it may correct the rest of the codes. when fixed turn light off with obd2 scanner. if you do not have one, then any auto parts store will erase the codes fo free of charge.

check the coolant level. check thermostat for correct operation. Have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracks . All indications are that the motor is overheating badly.

1993 jeep grand cherokee wont start till check engen light comes on

Your ecu computer is in need of repair. You have what is known as the Delayed Check Engine Light problem. There are a few components inside the ecu that are slowly failing and eventually will completely fail. The ignition has to be turned on, for a few minutes, and the jeep won't start until the check engine light eventually comes on. This is because the ecu feeds power to the fuel pump and injector relays and won't feed power until that light comes on. Have it repaired.
