The volume and on/off will not respond to the remote we have to unplug it to turn off. also the volume goes high and low by itself. could this be a weak resistor or gain control, or transistor? help!

This is becoz your Internal Remote control response program chip needs to be replaced! You need it to get repaired at nearest service station. Or it may be due to Your keys pressed continously from remote control. Check both the causes! then decide. It will help you!
Take the batteries out of the remote control, then apply a piece of black tape over the IR sensor, Unplug the power, wait a few minutes, now power the unit back up, does the unit still have the same volume high symptom? If so, remove the tape and see if the unit responds to any other commands(other than volume) from the front panel. If it responds to the panel controls, the processor is most likely good. very seldom is the IR transistor bad, if it is no input command will work.
The microprocessor ic is breaking down or the pad switches behind the buttons on the front of the set, "one or two are bad" disable the front panel by unplugging from main board, if problem goes away use remote to control set.
i would honestly suggest if you still have the receipt return it back. dont forget your rating thanks.
This is a very common problem for RCA TV. I have one as well. or go to www.tv.rca.com/ there are free manual there
If the front panel lock is on, you will need a working original remote (or a universal remote properly programmed for RCA) to turn the set on. The IR receiver is next to the buttons on the fromt but the RCA IR receivers are very reliable, and I have yet to see a bad one in a modern RCA TV. Once you turn the set on by remote, you can enter the menu and turn the FPA off.
