If the heater is cycling on and off continuously the problem may be a dirty filter. Try backwashing and rinsing the filter before anything else.

I have a Hayward H400 that shuts off at 88 degrees. What could this be?

Is this heater standalone, or is it hooked up to an external controller? If it is standalone, it sounds like you need a water temp sensor for the heater. If its hooked up to an external controller, you likely need a 10k temp sensor. What error code does the heater display when it shuts down? And what temperature are you able to read on the heater and/or external controller?

What is a 1F code on the hayward pool heater

The code you are referring to is actually IF, not 1F. It stands for ignition failure.
If the control exceeds the maximum number of ignition retries or recycles the heater will shut down and go into lockout. Automatic reset is 60 minutes.

1F Error Code on Hayword Heater

IF stands of igniton failure. Many things can cause this. Most notable, is a clogged or dirty burner orifice. The two middle ones are the most important. But i would clean them all out. They remove with a 5/16" wrench. Improper gas pressure could also cause this. However, you need a special tool, a manometer, to read this.

Hayward H400 Pool heater will not stay lit

"IF" - Hayward Pool Heater Fails to Ignite: the most common reason for this problem is insufficient gas supply. The Hayward heater LED display will show a diagnostic fault code of "IF" which stands for Ignition Failure. Undetected gas pressure problems if not investigated properly may result in unnecessary replacement and servicing of your Hayward Pool Heater.
