Question about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 Digital Camera

Open Question

Does a black screen mean my camera is ruined?

Camera has been charged. Lens will extend and retract, but screen is black and shutter will not fire. Screen is not cracked nor any other visible damage. Makes a sound like a single busy-signal tone when shutter button is pressed.

SOURCE: DSC-W130 Camera Lens extends and retracts

Try cleaning your battery compartment contacts with a Q-Tip "dampened" in rubbing alcohol. The computer is getting a weak signal and is unable to decipher its commands. Also, clean the battery terminals and the charger contacts. I'm certain this will solve your problem. Thanks, Dana

Try factory resetting it. Use then user manual for how to factory reset... Else you can call up customer care for a service centre location near you and if its in the warranty period you probably won't be charged.

Turns on for 1/2 second and turns off

It sounds like the focus element inside the lens is stuck. This is usually either due to an impact knocking the elements out of alignment, or to sand/debris entering the focus motor's gear drive and preventing it from rotating. The buzzing sound you hear is the focus motor attempting to rotate, but buzzing up against some obstruction. When the lens extends, you hear a buzzing sound, and then the lens retracts - this is usually the cause of the issue. Unfortunately there is not much you can do externally to fix this problem. The camera will need to be taken apart and repaired by a professional or by the manufacturer. David Millier http://advancecamera.com/repair

Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

My camera lens won't move. I recently was out on a photoshoot with friends, and I ended up falling down with the camera in my hand while the lens was extended. At first it didn't move at all, but I got the...

I am sorry to say that this is a problem related to the lens mechanism. The lens gears may have kinked/slipped when you fell down and this seems to be the reason why the lens cannot extend retrace. Unfortunately this is one repair that you don't wanna do yourself. The lens assembly has to be completely disassembled just to know the exact cause of the problem and any further damage means a new camera. Panasonic will charge you the cost of a new cam to fix it. So to get an estimate from your local camera tech would be the way to go.

I have a zoom error alert on the screen of my fuji j37 digital camera. When i turn the camera on the lens comes out and retracts straight away.

I had this problem for the first time yesterday, on my fifth use of the camera from new. The user manual says to turn it on and off a few times which I did but to no avail. I found advice on a different forum that said to hold your finger over the shutter as you turn it on, so that the lens doesn't have time to retract again. Sort of use your finger nail to hold the shutter up while the lens extends. Tried this and it worked, switched it off and back on agiain and it seems to be going fine now.

When i turn on my cybershot, the lens extends and retracts several times, then the screen goes mostly black and a message appears telling me to turn off and back on.

Same thing happened to my camera. I have the same camera. I fixed it though. I know what I'm about to say sounds idiotic, but bare with me. If you turn the power to the camera on, and catch. or grab the lens when it has fully extended and don't let it retract. Wait until it has stopped wanting to move than the fun part happends. Atleast for my camera it felt as if something got in around the lens. so if you twist the lens you will have about a fraction of play to twist the lens back and forth. This fixed mine. Try this with yours. But don't be too rough. gentle. I mean. these camera's are expensive afterall aha =)

might seem silly, but have you checked the batterries?? The beeps usually signal a loss of power, if not check shutter is not jammed with dust particles, use compressed air to shift it.

"lens error" on casio ex-z3

Sorry to say but a lens error actually is a problem that you cannot fix at home. When a lens error occurs, the motors inside that make the lens retract and protract were some how damaged, usually caused if the lens try coming out when you have it in your pocket or against a surface so it cant fully come out. You will have to send the camera in for service and you can do that by calling 1-800-706-2534, option 1.
