The broiler is made to be used without foil over the element. The manufacturer advertised that the broiler adds flavor when liquids from your meat / vegetables vaporize as they drop onto the element. In our experience, any cleaning of the element that is necessary is
easily done by a wipe-down after it has cooled with a wet dishcloth.
We sometimes use foil to line the interior of the broiler for easier clean-up, but have found no need to protect the element. If it gets as hot as ours, it will incinerate any drips that fall on it.
Putting foil between the grill rack and the element may limit the circulation of hot air, thereby lowering the heat reaching your food.
