Question about HP DeskJet 1220c InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Some time ago my HP1220c popped and smoked. It was just sitting for a couple of years when I had a need once again for a large format printer. I repaired the power supply; replaced the 47mf 450v electrolytic, 2 MOSFET's and the 3.15 amp fuse. It bench tersted just fine. Upon reinstalling it in the printer and turning it on the PC recognized it but after only 10-20 seconds the Power supply blew again. Same components plus a resistor this time. It has been repaired once again and tested with the main board plugged into it. I suspect a motor - seems the most obvious component to pull a high enough load to burn the P/S. I have taken resistance readings of all 4 motors (that I can find) and none are shorted. The current ratings are on the P/S but I don't know the operating voltage of the motors. I suspect its 18v and if so the current shouldn't exceed the capacity of the P/S, which is 2.2 amps. Unless both the carriage motor and the paper drive motors operate simutaneously, which I think they do. The small motor that moves the ink dock forward and back has a pretty goo cover of ink on it, but it doesn't appear to be shorted. Am I going down the right path? Or is there something obvious I'm missing. The MOSFET's were hard to get - they had to come from China. By the way, I'm in the Philippines. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Hi John Ray,
I know I could buy a new printer for $300, but that's a lot when you're retired and maybe you could fix the one you've got. Labor here in the Philippines is cheap (we have nothing but time on our hands). Thanks for the post. I'm still hoping I can fix this puppy.

With the electronics experience you have, changing of Cap and MOSFIT's, I must ask this question... Why, do you not have real projects to get into ??
If you have powered up the unit without the drain of the motors and after connecting the 4-motors and others you still pull to much current, I would continue tracing backwards.
I would check the rating of the FET"s and if you have to replace them anyway, Go larger, I wonder if the caps also took a dive. You ordered your FET's in a pair and not just replacing one at a time ? Sorry, just had to ask.. You got too much experience for this, Your like me, can't trash anything with a major attempt.
Have Fun

I think my egr valve on my 2005 2ltr Jaguar Xtype needs cleaning, how can I do this. I had it done about four years ago when the car lost power and back smoke was coming from exhaust. the car has started...

what you need is carb cleaner or throttle body cleaner then unbolt it from your engine, unplug everything hooked it then place a shop towel over the opening left on your engine for nothing falls in then take your EGR valve and place it on newspapers, or towels and spray the heck out of it, let it sit after spraying it, and repeat after you got it cleaned up, let it air out for a bit, and bolt and hook it back up, this is just a temporary fix it sounds like you are running rich if you have a scan tool, check your fuel trims they just might be off a little bit, if it took.about 4 years to.start smoking again, but if you are going to be keeping it for some time, then I would check the fuel trims or have them checked.and fix, it.could be.something as easy as a vacuum leak

Unfortunately, someone from the outside cannot handle this issue for you. Only you can register your printer from your end and you need to handle that through the Vendors website - regardless of where you downloaded the patch from. Registering your printer isn't to establish ownership and its not a one time activity. The computer will think the printer is a new accessory each time you reconnect it after not using it for a while or when you uninstall and reinstall the software for it. To get rid of the pop up messages, follow the prompts and continue on to the vendors website to complete your information again. This will stop the messages. I hope that this helps?

My 1996 0lds cutlass has been parked for 1 year and now it is smoking it was fine b-4 I parked it. any ideas

probably needs a good workout to lubricate all the seals it around the block a couple times and slowly work it back up to highway speeds...seals and gaskets can dry out and contract over time if not lubricated or pressurized by a running engine. next time you have to park your car for an extended period have somebody start the engine once every couple of weeks and run it for 10-20 mins.

Need an instruction manual

It sounds like you have an "offset smoker". The fire goes in in the firebox (the small offset box). If you have a rack that fits in the firebox, you can put that in there too and use it to grill.

Go to and click on "instruction manuals" and find the manual for the one that looks the most like yours. Char-Broil took over New Braunfels a few years ago.

Once you have it assembled, there are huge resources on the web on how to use it.

Personally I rarely use charcoal, I prefer the taste of cooking with Pecan wood - if you live in Texas you can buy a 50lb bag at Academy for about 10 bucks.

I grill over the firebox part directly (although I often close all the dampers and let the meat smoke a little while cooking). A few times a year I'll smoke a turkey or other meat in the main chamber, keeping the fire in teh firebox.

if you still havent started the bike yet from sitting.then i dont think the choke has anything to do with your problem.but ether way take the plugs out.I think your piston rings are frozen from sitting.did u winterrize it?with the plugs out pour a little auto trans fluid in each cylinder.very crank the bike over to coat the cylinders. becareful it could be messy now let the bike sit overnight.the next day crank bike over again.but this time for a few tries.then install fresh plugs.and try to start it.p.s there will be white smoke from the transmission fluid. that will go away in a couple of minutes.then all should be good.
