Question about Zoeller M53 Mighty Mate Iron Body, Poly Base Automatic Sump Pump 1/3 HP

1 Answer

Hi, My Zoeller m53 pump is 9 years old and stopped draining water out, but once the float is engaged, the motor runs. So do you think I need to remove the bottom plate to remove the clot? I cleaned out the caked on dirt/sut on the exterior of the pump and then tested it in a 5 gallon bucket and it pumped the water out just fine. But after I placed it back into the well and filled it with water, the pump can be heard but no water is pumped out. It is acting erratic and I wonder if I need to clean the interior or just buy a new pump. What do you advise? Thank you for your attention and help.

Youn will need to change the pump if it is 9 year old, it had a good life but when they work in shalow water is one ting once you submerge it it doesn't pump, it has just lost it power and not worth taking it all apart and replacing the parts, the impeller is worn out and thats where it gets it's pressure from how it turns to pull the water out and force it thru the outlet,,

try backflushing with high pressure water(carwash) if that doesnt work you have to remove the bottom plate to expose the impeller and remove debri, gasket will probably have to be replaced(silicone) will do

SOURCE: My Zoeller M53 Sump Pump

If your seal or gasket failed and water penetrated into the motor cabinet how certain are you that whatever you have done has actually remedied the underlying issue of the pump being grounded?

A new M53 is ~$125 - $150 and the oil is not something you can walk into the hardware store and pick up off the shelf. I'd want to be certain you have fixed the ground first. Having worked on these in the past it is unlikely you are going to fix anything wrong with the winding, especially for less than a new unit.

If all is OK and the oil is all you need ask around at local pump repair shops for 10 or 20 weight non-detergent pump oil...they should know what you want and if they sell it, you should be all set. As for the amount, pour it in slowly until you see the winding is fully submerged. You need to leave room at the top to allow for thermal expansion of the oil.

I had to reinstall float on my M53 but am not sure if the weight in the float needs to be on the bottom or top when installed

I'm not expert but have two M53 Zoeller sumps, one in the pit another as a spare which I plan on rebuilding. The weight on the float is at the bottom of both. Hope that helps.

Fixing a Zoeller M53 Sump Pump that won't turn on. Turns on by tapping or...

Just wanted to share my fix story. A couple of years ago I had a problem with my zoeller sump pump to turning on but it would if I ever so lightly tapped it or the discharge pipe. Naturally I suspected the switch and replaced it with the same results. I ended up zip tying a piece of foam to the float and bingo! This worked great for awhile until the foam loosened and got stuck. So back to the drawing board. I noticed on a parts list that zoeller recommends changing the float arm when replacing the switch. Put in a new float arm and it works great! No foam needed. I never thought to replace it in the first place because the old one moved fine but when compared to the new arm the new one is much smoother. I was able to remove the old arm with channel lock pliers and the new piece is press fit with some loctite #609 that came with it. Hope this helps!

Fixed! Zoeller M53 won't turn on. Will turn on with a slight tap.

I had the same problem of pump not turning on unless I tapped the pipe to create a vibration. I took the float off and cleaned the grime / buildup. The buildup changed the buoyancy of the float (made it heavier) such that it did not float high enough to trigger the switch. Once cleaned, the float floats much higher above the water line and triggers the switch.

Pump won't shut off. Float is free and moving, but doesn't switch unit off when in down position. Is there a fix or is it time for new pump?

Can you replace the switch? If not, you can wire in a new generic float switch for far less than purchasing a new pump. A decent hardware or electrical supply house should have a float switch and they should be able to help you wire it or you can Google float switch installation to get an idea of how to do it yourself (it is not too complicated).

i hope this helps

Rapid on/off switching while crock is drained below float level

check the check valve it could have mud or just debris on the flap,, take it apart and clean it out see if this doesn;'t help after that you might just want to change the pump if it is in a high volume usage, area
