Are you talking about the Engagement pully? Item 24?

If so, the reason it is hard to turn is because it is attached to the shaft of the engine and also has the pully for the wheel drive attached to the same shaft.

SOURCE: How do I chamnge the oil in my Craftsman lawn

There should be a pipe OR quick release valve coming out the right side at the bottom of the engine where it bolts to the frame. Most of the Craftsman riders I have worked on, had a long pipe with an elbow at the end of it and a plug in the bottom of the elbow for draining. Turn the wheels all the way to the left to allow enough room for a collection pan. It holds less than 2 quarts so the pan doesn't need to be too large

SOURCE: Loss of drive in a Craftsman Lawn tractor

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

Sounds like your drive belt may have came off or it needs to be replaced. Take the battery out from under the seat to see if belt is still around transaxle. Sometimes it will jump off when doing a lot of starting stopping

Belt diagram for deck belt craftsman 1000

From the pulley under the engine, take both sides an go straight back, between the two pulleys in the forward inside position, go past them and then out to the blade pulleys around the front of the pulleys and to the outside and then the back and then across the back. If you are looking down from above from the seat, "looking through the mower" you would see an inverted T shape.

I hope this helps get you going.

The tractor will not go forward or backward it starts right up but will not engage

1) The drive belt between the engine and transmission has broken or jumped off a pulley.
OR
2) Your hydrostatic transmission is dead.

DO NOT STICK YOUR FINGERS UP INSIDE A RUNNING MOWER TO SEE IF THE DRIVE BELT IS MOVING.

Tractor will not go forward or in reverse it started slipping in forward then it just quit

Check your clutch belt and pulleys to see if your belt is off or worn. Check for worn pulleys.

Craftsman model 917.271814 will not go forward or reverse. Heard a "click" and mower stopped moving; engine and blade still running.

Check the drive belt that runs back to the transaxle,it sounds like it broke. If the belt is in the pulley check to see if the transaxle pulley is turning when the clutch is out. Also make sure both wheel axle keys are in the rear wheels. If all this checks out the transaxle may have broke, look underneath to see if it is broken there.
