Toshiba 43HX70 poor picture quality after replacing convergence ICs

TV tech replaced convergence IC's after the convergence went completely wacko....Convergence is perfect now, but the image quality is dull and grainy rather than the crisp, lush picture we had before. Watching DVDs is now like watching some 20 year old VHS tape from the basement or something. Tech just says the tubes looked a little "gassy" and it has nothing to do with the repair........Before the convergence issue happened days ago, the image was terrific. Can changing the ICs create this problem, or did it 'just so happen' that the tubes started going bad just when the original ICs failed?

Picture looks like rainbow

You will need to replace the convergence IC or ICs and replace any 2 watt low ohm (under 10 ohms) resistors. Your best repair for this along with instructions is to find this website. Have your model number handy...everything you need will be included, with there step by step repair. I have used this a couple of times and was successful. Thanks for asking!

I have a 53 inch hitachi ultravision #53UDX10B Its out of focus and when you press the magic focus button it trys then pops up with the # 4 in the corner is this a convergence problem or what ?

Yes, you have a convergence failure. Usually requires replacement of 2 X STK ICs and any burnt resistors associated with the function that is faulty.

Look at the user menu and compare with images on our Convergence Gallery. Try to adjust in the convergence adjust menu. Identify the functions that do not work and make note. When you replace the ICs, pay special attention to the low ohm resistors for the non-working function. They will be located near the colored plug associated with the non-working function. If red vertical will not adjust, check resistors near the red plug.

There are many posts and websites that offer "new and improved Convergence IC substitutes. My advice is to use the original part numbers and replace any burnt resistors with original values. Many ICs purchased on the Internet are very poor quality and do not work. Many users get substitute replacement ICs and never get their TVs working again.

If you have other electronics repair experience, this job may be done with some chance of success. If you have no experience, there are many secondary problems that can and usually do appear. Determining how to fix the secondary faults and how to correctly align the TV is difficult without prior convergence repair experience.

Some of the common problems encountered are:
1. Poor solder techniques, resulting in damaged PC boards or poor solder connections.
2. Poor quality or wrong parts installed and recognizing this problem.
3. Resistors open or burnt. Some resistors are weakened by the initial faulty IC. Replacing with a "good" IC and starting the TV causes the weakened resistors to burn up. IC may be ok but there are one or more open resistors that measured ok when ICs were being replaced.
4. Wrong ICs used, causing resistors to burn up.
5. Resistors that measure normal and become faulty when heated by current flow.
6. Recognizing that convergence circuit is repaired correctly and alignment is needed.
7. Major alignment in service menu required because data is corrupted by multiple tries of magic focus or manual adjustment while faulty circuit conditions exist.
8. Major alignment required because user adjusted centering rings or physically changed mechanical focus adjustment, then mis-adjusted convergence settings trying to correct mechanical alignment faults.
9. User has not connected plugs and connectors correctly and caused secondary damage or mis-alignment trying to correct secondary issue.

Physically replacing the ICs may appear simple but recognizing if a fault still exists or if correct repair is required causes many attempts at repair to fail. Keep it simple. Replace with good quality original part numbers, measure suspect resistors and adjust only what is necessary.

There are only 3 things to fix, IC failure, resistor failure and user induced secondary faults. Data processor and memory is bulletproof.

Toshiba 43hx70 Cinema projection TV-where are the IC relays?

DID you ever get this fixed I am wanting to replace mine, I paid big $$ for this tv back 6 or so years ago, the picture cinvergence isnt real bad, but I cant line u the red and blues in the menu as good as they need to be. I was also wondering If i replace the lamp if the tv would be brighter. I have most my setting turned up but...The picture is not as bright and crisp as it used to be any one have a suggestion on this also..

That symptoms are due to failure of convergence out ICs in your TV that will be replaced to get correct converge picture on front screen.

There are 2 big black IC mounted on big aluminum heat sink and number would be written on as STKxxx, these 2 ICs will be replaced.

If you want to repair TV by yourself then confirm model number of TV to provide you more info or call local tech to replace said ICs.

If the picture was good prior to the 3D images, I would fix it. The convergence ICs either have poor connections or are defective. The IC is an STK392-110. There may be 2 inside the set. If you have this repaired, expect a labor cost in the $200 range. Request that the ICs be replaced rather than the board changed. This will maintain all of the internal settings and require only part replacement not a complete re-convergence adjustment.

Yes its actually a very easy repair. You need two STK392-110 Convergence ICs and six 1.2 ohm 2watt resistors. You can get the replacement parts and instructions at the following link.

It is failure of convergence out ICs and subject part needs to be replaced, TV has 2 ICs and both will be replaced.

Yes the STK 392-150 is a better quality IC. You will need to replace both of them. Also if you purchase the ICs from the link i am posting they provide free instalation instructions with pictures and also have free insatant messageing tech available which is completely free. I think the hardest to solve problems are those I installed!!
Where do we start==no lecture,but I never change a resistor
unless it has changed (in value!) Use a digital meter and check
the value of each resistor.Toshiba is a bit confusing as to values
of each resistor and location in relation to the IC's.Go over your own work first.Check micro fuses in power supply=F851,F852,
etc. Carefully resolder steel jumper wires at board edge,they feed
B+ to convergence amp circuit.Be sure to verify no shorts in pins
of IC's.(use your meter).........T
