Question about D-Link DI 514 Wireless Router (DI-514)

1 Answer

I can't access my wireless internet, asking for a pass phrase

I have hooked up a D-link wireless router to my Dad's computer and iconnect 612 modem so I can use my toshiba laptop to connect to wireless internet.
The laptop has a built in a wireless tracking device and has detected 'default' wireless internet from Dad's router. When i click on 'connect to a wireless network' in network and sharing centre (Vista) it brings up the 'default' secured network. I click on that and it asks for a security key or pass phrase. Can you please tell me where to locate this on Dad's computer? or the steps necessary to set up the wireless network if I have done this incorrectly?

The D Link router is what is causing the issue - Cut your losses and get a linksys ( netgears are ok so maybe one of those ) but avoid D Link and Belkin equipment as far as wireless or networking goes.

An apple airport extreme ( although a bit more expensive ) are very good.

This can be caused by a number of issues most have to do with the router itself and not the tablet. First, let's make sure the router DHCP Server is not frozen so take the following steps:
Step 1: If the router is separate from the Cable or DSL Modem, power down the router/wireless, next power down the cable/dsl modem. Power up the cable/dsl modem wait 60 seconds then power up the router/wireless wait 2 minutes
Step 2: Try to connect to the wireless
Step 3: If you have a modem or wireless router supplied by Comcast, Verizon, AT&T or any major carrier, contact them asking them to walk you through resetting and rebooting and updating the firmware to the router/wireless.
Step 4: After the reset and update try to connect, if it fails move on
Step 5: Log into the wireless/modem - let's change the wireless encryption. Go to the wireless settings, change the wireless settings to WPA Personal and add any pass-phrase. Try to connect using the new pass-phrase.
Step 6: If you still can not connect, as a last resort switch the wirlesss encryption to WPA for testing. Try to connect, if this works contct the vendor and have the modem replaced.

Want to set password so only computers with password can use it

If the router hasn't been accessed before it is simple. Just open your web browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1 a window will appear and ask for a user name and password. Leave the username bland and type ADMIN in the password. This should get you into the router configuration. Just look at the top navigation bar and look for wireless. Once there look for security. Once there you can "name" the network and choose a pass phrase. Make sure to SAVE CHANGES. Once done then any computers wishing to access your network (internet) will have to have the pass phrase. I use WPA personal and TKIP pass phrase. You can also disable the SSID broadcast, so that no one can search for your network.

Set security pass code

After connecting modem(1) to router (2) connect your computer (3).
(4) Power on your modem, wait for modem to cycle(approx 2 minutes)
(5) Power on your router.
(6) Insert your CD - Click Router Setup & follow steps to setup secure wireless network...
NO CD DRIVE INSTALLATION
IN YOUR BROWSER ADDRESS FIELD:
http://www.routerlogin.net & click ENTER

1. Enter the router User Name admin & default password password to open your router's main settings page.
2. Main settings page, you'll be asked if you want to "Check for Update". Click Cancel. ( you can always check for new firmware after you're connected to internet)
3 Choose first menu item on left; Setup Wizard & make sure YES is selected
click NEXT, follow prompts complete setup.
SET UP WIRELESS SECURITY
  • 1. From main page choose Wireless settings
  • 2. Name your network- something easy to remember (Hint* People see it when you are up & running, write it down as well!) {The default name is NETGEAR}
  • 3. Select your security method. NETGEAR recommends: WPA-PSK(TKIP +WPA2-PSK (AES).
  • THEN, enter a Pass-phrase {Write down also, you will get e-mail confirming registration etc... But, BSTS.
  • NOTE: Both your Network Name (SSID) & Pass phrase are case sensitive. Network name, Security method & Pass phrase must all be the same on all the wireless devices connected to your router.
  • 4. Click APPLY & close your browser.
Depending on your cable/internet provider- if these instructions don't do it,
one of their agents should be kind enough to assist?
I was lucky enough to have them do it with me over the phone, after I had surgery & got sick of looking of the thing in the box in my floor!
Good Luck!

You can find the wireless password also called wep key or wpa pass phrase through the set-up page of the router. If you don't know how to access it, follow the instruction in How to Access the Router's Setup Page (just click it.)

Upgraded to windows 7 and i am unable to connect to the internet. I get a limited or no connectivity

I'm thinking modem/router combination. first power down modem and router. Then leaving router unplugged, power up modem, make sure it's sync up then power up router. If this is a wireless connection search for your networks name on computer/laptop..ie View wireless connection. Windows allows a automatic setup if the wireless connection is unsecured. If it is secured Windows 7 will prompt a pass phrase/ or access code. Good luck. Repeat process if necessary

I have internet with time warner so have linksys router wireless'but when a try to connect to other computer don,t work

First, check to make sure that you can get Internet through a wired connection, if you can't then wireless won't work either. Second, if you can, then try connecting to the wireless without using WEP or any security. You can turn this off by going to 192.168.1.1 in your web browser while wired to the router from your PC and go under wireless security. If you can connect from an unsecured access point then set up a WEP key with a pass-phrase and when you are asked for the pass-phrase from the PC use the the hex key 1 that is generated by the router instead of the pass-phrase. You should have no problem connecting. Thye wizard that comes on the configuration CD will not set up your wireless correctly, you really have to configure the system using the IP.

I have a wireless Netgear router. Everyone around

depending on your type of netgear router, the way you enter the setup is different. I use a netgear router and th emeens of access is to type in your web browser http://routerlogin.com/start.htm

Your internet provider does not have anything to do with your local security settings.

you will need to go to the wireless settings link to choose a security type. I recommend you to use at minimum WPA-PSK(TKIP) You will then choose a pass phrase of 8 characters. This will stop the unauthorized access.
You will be asked for the pass phrase when connecting to your network.
If you need any other help, please just reply.

D Link model 2310

When you connected your PC directly to the modem, were you able to get the internet working automatically or did you have to run a dialup-like connection?

If it worked automatically, try this:
1. Connect a PC to a numbered port of the Dlink router (don't connect the modem to the router nor the PC)
2. Open Internet Explorer and enter http://192.168.0.1 on the address bar. This should then ask you to login. (restart the router and the PC if nothing happened then try again)
3. Enter admin for the username and blank for the password
4. Once you're on the Dlink Setup page, click on Network Settings on the left panel.
5. Change the Router IP address to 192.168.2.1 then hit Save Settings
6. Now, connect a cable from the Speedstream modem to the WAN port of the Dlink router then check if your internet is working from the wired PC.

If its still not working, turn off the modem and the router and then power the modem first (wait for the lights to be stable) then plug the router.

Hope this works for you. Goodluck!

You should only use 1 DCHP device
try and reduce your router to 1 only and use a access point for your wireless not another router they will try to give each other an IP
