Did you try running the driver update tool from Gateway's website? These tools are usually pretty good with finding the drivers for the specific hardware of computers automatically for you:

i suggest since you are having many issues with this that you pop the bottom case off your unit where your wifi card is and look at the model unit information. the issue seems to be with the wifi card not responding and because of that your network controller and wifi card are not showing up. i have resolved this issue before by also downloading the chipset driver utility from the motherboards website and making sure i have the correct version if you have downgraded to xp. this way the motherboard will respond correctly to your devices attached. in the event you have not downgraded i suggest you locate the exact wifi card you have and download the correct drivers for XP here is what you should have loaded in your laptop one of these
Internal ActionTec IEEE 802.11b
Internal Broadcom BCM94306 IEEE802.11g
Internal Intel® PRO/Wireless IEEE 802.11b/g
Internal Broadcom BCM94300 IEEE802.11a/g
this link will give you all the network drivers for these units running XP. try the correct one out based on your machine.
let me know if that helps if not it could be a different issue causing the network card not to show up
