posted by ssterjo on Nov 06, 2007

hello.my printer has a machine error 51, but i cant find any solution on the net. please anyone tell me what this error means and how to fix it. please, i am going crazy. thanks

Comment by ssterjo, posted on Nov 08, 2007

i cleaned the encoder strip. it gave me before an error 50, and i followed you instructions. now it gives error 51, and i dont know whats the problem. please give me something more specific. thanks.

Comment by ssterjo, posted on Nov 09, 2007

nothing yet. i dont think the encoder is the problem. as far as i know, the error nr. for the encoder strip is 50, mine is 51, and the encoder strip is correctly in place. thanks

ok, thank you. can you tell me which part is the purge cam? in a photo maybe? can i buy it? will it cost much? thanks

Comment by ssterjo, posted on Nov 15, 2007

i found this on a web page: 51 The purge cam HP switch sticks to ON in the initialization sequence.
what does it mean? can i repair the purge switch now? should i clean it or what? please answer asap.

maybe im wrong, but i dont see any broken gears or any other piece inside. however, i dismounted the purge, and all the gears fell out. can you send me a photo how the gears were, so i can remount it and try it a last time please? i just want to find the places of every part, because i dont remember. thanks

please tell me how to remount the purge cam in the printer. the gears and the other parts have fallen when i dismounted it, and i dont know their places. please help

Comment by ssterjo, posted on Nov 18, 2007

i dont need instructions, just a photo of the working purge, so i can see how the gears were, in order to remount them. remounting them is not a problem, i just dont remember how they were.

Brother Error Codes
RAM clear (most models)
Quickly press function * 2 8 6 4
Display should read maintenance
Press 0 1 for a full ram clear, or 9 1 to retain user data
Display should read reinit for a few moments then redisplay maintenance
Press 9 9 to exit the maintenance mode
Other maintenance mode switches:
01 ram clear (see 91 below)
02 scanner initialize (feed a white sheet, then a black sheet)
05 white level
09 print test
10 modify soft switches
11 print configuration list
16 panel test
19 CML test
20 signal test
21 tonal test
23 filter RX
54 scan edge
55 scanner area
66 test print memo
75 display drum life (if enabled on laser models)
76 reset drum life counter (laser models)
91 parameter initialize (user programming remains intact)
95 protection
B2 error = scanner or power supply error
Brother 950/980: On copy or transmit they may produce black pages. Prone to bad scanner (CCD). Brother may provide a replacement CCD at no charge to the original owner. Sometimes leaving the unit unplugged for a few hours will solve the problem temporarily.
Brother HL600 series laser printer toner will work in the laser fax & multifunction machines (part number TN100HL = TN100PPF). Drum units may be interchangeable as well (?).
Brother 1350/1550/1950: Problem: Record paper jams. Solution: Replace upper shoot. P/N UF6058001. Although there seems to be nothing causing the jam, the upper shoot gets stress marks on the ends. Replace even though it is not broken. (Thank you David Price, dyprice@earthlink.net)
Thermal Transfer Machines: Only one side of the page is printing. Caused by the printhead latch being cracked. The latch is blue in color there is one on each side of the printhead, replace both latches

You have to open the printer to fix the encoder strip which might be stained with ink (in this case it has to be replaced). Search here for error 50 (which is nearly the same issue) and see how to open the printer and to fix it.

BTW: The error codes for inkjet printers are different to the laser ones ;-) All brother inkjets useing the same carts have the same technique!

When reinserting the encoder strip plz watch the triangle sign! You can see this arrow (triangle) on the edge of one side of the encoder strip. The arrow has to show upwards and must be positioned on the right side where the purge station is.

Please make sure that the encoder strip is in good position within the printhead. Will post a picture later on!

Sounds that the purge cam shift is broken. Sorry, this cant be fixed anymore.

Comment by Mix-it-up, posted on Nov 12, 2007

You cant fix it by yourself:
The spare part will cost more than a new dcp 130c!

Dont waste your time and money!

Go buy a new one or a good running 2nd hand one!
..and sell the defectiv one at eBay!

Comment by Mix-it-up, posted on Nov 15, 2007

you cant fix it because its a allinone built which means that the purge engine and the paper feeder are one part which are driven by changing gears (yes, its the idea of a motorcar gear). one of the part is broken.

Comment by Mix-it-up, posted on Nov 18, 2007

Sorry. Cant give you a hand, because the print engine is a built-in-one incl. purge station and paper feeder. I dont know how to rebuilt that.

Techs NEVER repair one of those parts and change the whole unit when a error indicates a prob with that
(time is money, you know).
Sorry!
