Sorry to inform you but this printer was only designed for Windows, although there are drivers for all current versions of windows Canon does not support this printer on Macintosh.

your printer cover/lid may not be closed properly.
Try removing whatever removable parts present in your printer, like lid, paper tray, etc and replace them back to proper position and switch on your printer.
Most of the times, problem may get solved in this way.
