I have a GE side by side fridge (GSS22GPE). There was ice build up on the back of freezer and the cooling was not good in the top of freezer and the refrigerator. I defrosted it manually and cleaned out the condensor and it worked for about 3 weeks. Then the ice started to form again and I am back to square one. What are the defrosting parts that could go bad and is there a way to check to find out which component is bad. Is it easy to fix and worth it. The refrigerator is 5 or 6 years old. I have some experience with refrigeration but not refrigerators. I work for a compressed air drying company.
HI, You will need to remove the rear inside panel of the freezer and check the defrost heater located on the bottom of the evaporator coils, for continuity. If the heater shows a break in it, replace the heater. If the heater checks out ok, check the bimetal switch that is located on the top of the evaporator coil. It has to be tested while it is cold. Check coninuity and if is shows the switch is open, replace the bi-metal switch.
If the heater and bi-metal check out ok, you will need to replace the mother board.
The heater is the nost common issue with this model.
I hope this helps you and if I can assist you further, please let me know.

my ge side by side refrigerator keeps stopping for periods of time, ice cream melts and then its starts running again on its own. This is the second refridgerator of this type I have owned in the last three years, had the same problem with the previous one (only 2 years old). Why?
