You have air intrusion into the system! There are many options for the cause, but I can give you the most common ones!

1. Once you have the system going, look for drips around equipment, any plumbing connections, the filter and pump especially. If there is a small leak, that is the problem, generally an o-ring has gone bad.

2. If you can not start the system, start with the pump. Check the lid for cracks, the o-ring under the lid, and the plumbing connections should have o-rings also. Then go the the valve, check for signs of leaks there. On the filter, depending on which one you have, there are o-rings all over. The air release valve, pressure gauge, tank band if you have a two piece filter, are a few of the places to look for that leak.

Pool cleaner starts and then stops working

Check for water flow / water flow restrictions / and water flow blockages.

Many things create water flow reductions: Dirty filters, plugged impellers, packed with debris baskets - both skimmers and at pump, closed to partially closed valves, air suction leaks: worn shaft seal, worn orings at pump lid or pump volute body, low water level, stuck skimmer weir blade/gate in the up position & skimmer empties and air is sucked into the system which may cause the pump to lose prime. This a problem that goes un-noticed and is hard to detect even by some service technicians!

I have an air leak in intake line

Question:

What do I do if my pool/spa pump is loosing suction or prime?

Answer: by Osko Pool n Spa Pool Pump Losing Suction or Prime If your Swimming Pools Filter system looses Prime, it is caused by one of the following conditions.
Note: The lost of suction/prime is caused a leak which in turn sucks air into the system. The lost of suction/prime will be anywhere from the Main Pool Skimmer(s) to the Pool Pump. It will NOT be from the Pool Pump to the Pools Main Return(s).
1) First make sure that your water level is high enough so that the skimmer is not sucking air.
2) Check the Pump Pot Housing Lid Seal and be certain that its completely sealing and is not
Sucking air into the system. Check the lid for cracks. If either condition is true, replace the Pump Pot Lid Seal and/or entire lid
3) Check all fittings, clamps and hoses from the pools skimmer to the Pools Pump Pot Housing for wear, tightness and leaks.
4) Check Pool Pump Pot Housing for cracks.
If everything aforementioned in good working order, the next thing to check is the Pump Pot Housing Main Seal and the Pumps Impeller and finally the pump.

5) While the Pool Pump Motor is running, carefully inspect the area where the Pump Pot Housing attaches to the Pump Motor. See if there is any water leaking. Next, spray the area with water and see if the water is sucked into the Housing. If so, your Main Seal is damaged.
6) Disassemble the front half of the Pump Pot Housing from the back half and inspect the Pump Motor Impeller. (This is a high suspect part). See if there is any sign of wear or breakage. (This happens over time from debris in the water passing over the impeller). If so, your Impeller is damaged.
7) Re-inspect the Pump Pot Housing Main Seal by standing the partially disassembled upright, with the Pump Motor towards the ground. Pour water over the impeller and into the cavity. See if the water leaks thru to the outside of the Pump Pot Housing. If so, your Main Seal is damaged.
8) Remove the cover from the rear of the Pump Motor. Using a large standard blade, (straight), screwdriver or wrench... turn the main motor shaft. Listen for grinding and/or rumbling and feel for any restrictions while turning. If you hear or feel either, your bearings and/or brushes are damaged.
If everything seems to be in good working order, then you need a new pump... not just replacement parts

Prime

Hi to prime your pump you fill the strainer basket with water and make sure all connections are tight with no leaks. Once you seal the lid turn on your pump and it should prime. If you have an issue you can force water through the suction line by putting a hose in the skimmer and force the water through your suction line. Time to Open the Swimming Pool

If the pump is primed and the bleeder valve has no air in it, try turning off the skimmers and using the bottom drain as your primary water source also check the pool level to make sure it is reaching the skimmers if not try adding water to your pool

My pool pump will run fine once I prime the system from the top of the pump basket. Then once the timer shuts the pump off, when it trips the switch to run again there is no water in the pump and it cannot...

If you are a long way above the surface of the pool and you have a leak on the filter it could be a check valve problem.
With it competly loosing the prime it sounds more like a suction leak. This will be in the plumbing and will need a re-plumb or it could be as simple as a lid "O" ring or cracked lid.
What happens is the air get's in the tank and air will compress when under pressure. Then when the pump shut's down the air can expand again. When it does it will rush back through the system and blow the prime right out of the pump. Quite often you will see water blow out of the skimmer or just blow the skimmer lid off. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Not self priming itself. when it turns off the water pushes back out of the skimmer and pushes the basket up. it loses water and the pump cant re-prime itself.

PRIME PUMP, OPEN AIR VALVE ON FILTER. OR TAKE THE LID OFF YOUR FILTER AND SEE IF IT STARTS TO PUMP... YOU DO HAVE IT PLUMBED RIGHT? THE PIPE COMING OUT OF THE PUMP GOES TO THE FILTER !! I'M YOUR LOCAL POOL PUMP REPAIR GUY IN LONGWOOD FLORIDA. WHERE THE POOL IS ALWAYS OPEN

My Hayward sand filter is blowing air and debris back into pool. When I shut it off, air/water comes billowing up through skimmer. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

You have an air leak in your system somewhere. When it get's in your filter tank the water pressure compresses the bubble and when the system goes off the bubble expands and rushes back through the system and blows the skimmer lid.
Check your pump lid and "O" ring for cracks and be sure it's lubed correctly. Check the plumbing going into the pump and be sure it is tight. If you loose prime or the pump runs with a dirty basket for any leingth of time the water will overheat and shrink the plumbing to loosten it. If this is the case you will need to replumb the pumb.
These are the usual things, but it could be many others. If you open the filter it should have an internal air bleed. Check to be sure this is in good condition and sticks up into the top of the filter.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

Ok I assume the pump is running? Check the lid again to be sure the "O" ring gasket is in place. If it leaks, it will draw in air, and won't flow full flow. Also check the lid for cracks. If you have seperate valves on your skimmer and main drain, I ususally close the skimmer valve and open the main drain valve fully. Once the pump is pumping full, I usually open the skimer fully, and only open the main drain about 40%. Another tip would be to close these valves on the suction side when you clean the basket, and do it rather quickly, and you won't have as much trouble loosing your prime.

My pool pump won't prime

If the pump is above the pool water level the it is unlikly that the tank will fill completely with valves open (which is ok). Most pumps are self priming and will pick up a prime with water level below suction inlet on strainer. Try starting on main drain again and slowly open skimmer line. Did you remove water from skimmer line and winterize(if in cold weather climate)during closing?.I know this sounds stupid, but make sure water level in pool is well into skimmer. If air situation remains after scspriggs' and these thoughts then prepare for a pressure test on skimmer line to determine location of leakage.
