Make sure the drum is spinning. Also you may want to make sure the pump is not plugged.

Is the machine is spinning and draining check that the pump or outflow pipe is not blocked.

Try first to check the outlet pipe that goes into the sump under the sink or where ever you have the pipe going to. Get ready with a bucket or pan and disconnet the outflow pipe from the sump, drain the water into the bucket/pan then check for blockages. If the pipe is clear from blockages then two things will need to be checked. 1) the pump to see if it is blocked, 2) the carbon brushes to see if they have worn down. If they have your machine will not spin or move for that matter.

    Good luck

How do I get my washer to just soak the clothes without draining?

The washing machine cannot operate at all with the lid up, unless the lid switch is stuck in the closed/on position. Draining water out when it should not is controlled by the circuit board of electronic components. Thus it is defective too.

I want to keep the water in my Roper top load washer overnight so it will soak the load of whites I have started but the machine drains.

You should be able to select a soak cycle without having to turn off the water supply, but it may time out eventually and drain the tub. This p[events oversoaking the clothes

Clothes soaking wet after washer is done

There is either a problem with the drain or spin cycle. Before the spin cycly starts, ensure that the water drains fully. If it does, then it may either be the belt slipping or the timer malfunctioning. If there is water in the tub when it starts spinning, then you have a blockage in the drain line.
