I have a 250 watt radio shack amp. it comes on but when the volume is raised to about half the protection light flashes and the amp shuts down until i lower the volume.

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'nekkid'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as another possible root cause for intermittent shutdown.

When i turn up the volume my amp shuts down i turn it down and it comes back on. I have a crossfire vr1000d what am i doing wrong?

Is the protect light in your amplifier turns on when it shuts down? If yes, then your amplifier lacks voltage. The reason why it goes on protect mode is, the amplifier is needing an amount of voltage from your car, since your car cannot provide that amount of voltage your amplifier is not getting anything, instead of getting voltage to produce watts its getting minimum voltage & producing heat, to save itself it goes on protect mode so the incoming power shuts off & cools the amplifier.
Your on vol 40, amplifier is working fine, when you turn it up to vol 50 your amplifier shuts of, then you put it back to vol 40 & your amplifier turns back on.
At vol 40 your voltage is 12v or above. but in vol 50 your voltage drops to 11 & below.

Check your battery or alternator if they are giving enough voltage

Hope this helps your inquiry. Have a blessed weekend.

The amp shuts off all the time. Had to reset it, after half an hour it shuts off again. Is there any solution for that? Thanks

The amp is probably in protection mode due to excess heat, a short circuit out at the speakers or an internal problem. My guess is it's heat from being driven hard. Make sure the unit has sufficient ventilation or try turning the volume down a bit.

Protection light comes on , was only coming on when i turned up the stereo , now it stays on , all the wires are good and i cracked the amp open and nothing looks burnt

check your gain on your amp. If it gets hot the shuts off into protection mode you are over working your amp. Check to see the way your subs are wired up and see if your amp can handel the load.

This is because the amp. Fault
  1. If the amp. Is getting hot turn the radio at low volume and keep it for more than 30 min. if it goes off, the amp. Is not good but if steel running you need to ventilated the amp. Check for air ventilation.
  2. The headphones are steel working because the rear audio system is not connected to the amp. That is the way it is

When my zr1000 amp kicks on it automaticaly averheats and shuts off it is also hot to the touch what should i do

One great amp !!! I would send it in to kicker. It looks like you may have one or more mosfets that are either shorted or on the way out. Does the amp have any protection lights that may give an indication of the source? Some thing that come to mind are: Shorted outputs, Speaker wires shorted or touching ground, power supply mosfet's

I have an Alpine M500 mono amp that works great, until you turn up the volume. I can adjust the bass down at the head unit, but at higher bass the amp shuts off. And then comes back on after a couple...

I don't think either, I believe your running theamp load too low with too low an ohm speakers and this cases the amp to produce more power but not stable and it overheats and the thermal protection cuts the amp off when the temp gets too hot to prevent damage.. Make sure your speakers depending on how they are wired do not exceed the amps load rating
