Try replacing the phase board, it's above the speed control plate with 4 wires coming out of it.

SOURCE: mixer speed settings

It could be the phase control, or it could be that the governor assembly or associated spring is missing or malfunctioning.

SOURCE: Mixer goes really fast then stops

First thing, check the Hall Effect Sensor (part # 9703312) to make sure that it is seated snugly AND properly!  The Hall Effect sensor measures the speed of a tiny rotating magnet and basically tells your mixer how fast it should rotate.  I was experiencing the same problem that many others have described here--my mixer would go really fast no matter what speed I put it on and it would shut off after five seconds. I came to the FixYa site and saw that one solution that seemed to work was to replace the Hall Effect sensor.  So I went to a local hardware store and purchased a new Hall Effect Sensor for about $13.  After I replaced the "defective" sensor, my mixer still did not work.  So, I started experimenting with the three prong orientation of the control board--this can make a big difference. After a little trial and error, I found the correct orientation for the sensor and my mixer worked good as new!  But I was curious to see if the improper orientation was the cause of my original "defective" sensor.  So I put the "defective" sensor back with the proper orientation and THIS ALSO FIXED MY SPEED PROBLEM! There was nothing wrong with my original Hall Effect Sensor at all--it simply was not snugly or properly seated!  I'm not sure how it happened--possibly over time the sensor prongs may have become unseated from the vibrations of running the mixer on high speeds--but my original Hall sensor was not seated properly or snugly.  So before you run out and buy a new Hall Effect sensor make sure that the original one is not only snugly seated but also properly oriented!  If I knew how to add digital pics, I would have put pictures in my comments to clearly demonstrate what I found.  Unfortunately, I am not sure how to do this.   To sum this up: 1. Download the parts information and diagrams from the Kitchenaid site and find the Hall sensor (part # 9703312).  2. Make sure that the Hall sensor is firmly attached on both ends.  The actual sensor should be located next to a tiny magnet and this end needs to be securely seated.  And the other end of the Hall effect sensor has three small prong holes which also need to be firmly and corrected seated to the control board! Bottom line, my mixer is working like new and I put the original Hall Effect sensor back in the mixer. I'm going to hold on the new one as a backup...you never know.

SOURCE: Kitchenaid K5A mixer 10 speed only runs on fast, no slow speed

Pull the back off and there will be two screws at the top of the Speed Control Plate and a 3rd screw at the bottom. Tighten the top two screws down. [email protected]. Let me know if it works.

SOURCE: kitchenaid mixer speed

I would recommend that you first check the Hall Effect sensor which determines the mixer’s speed.  I had this exact problem and I actually went out and bought another Hall sensor for about $13.  I replaced the original sensor and made sure that the connection between the sensor and control board was nice and snug. My mixer worked as good as new! But I was curious to know if my original sensor was defective, so I put it back in mixer and again made sure all of the connections were snug and tight. Guess what?  My original sensor also made my mixer work!  There was nothing wrong with the original Hall Effect sensor except that the connection between the control board and sensor was not tight--unfortunately I didn't check the connection before I decided to buy another sensor. My guess is that the connection between the control board and the sensor probably loosens or comes undone over time from use and vibrations. To fix your problem:
1.  Download the mixer parts and diagrams from the Kitchenaid website to see what the Hall Effect sensor looks like. BTW the part number is 9703312.

2.  You'll need a phillips head screwdriver to open up the mixer gear case cover.
3.  Make sure that the connection between the control board and sensor is absolutely tight and snug.
4.  Also, make sure that the orientation of the sensor is correct.  It's difficult to tell which way the sensor should be connected because the control board has three prongs and the sensor can attach facing up or down. After you've made the connection, run the mixer. If it still doesn't work, disconnect the sensor, reconnect it with the prongs facing the opposite direction and try it again.  I actually found the right sensor orientation through a little trial and error.  But by going through this trial and error, I also had my Eureka moment when I realized that the original sensor probably would also work if it were reconnected with correct orientation.
5.  This whole process probably takes about 10-15 minutes to perform.
6.  Finally, use your common sense and make sure to unplug the mixer before checking, connecting or disconnecting anything.

Hi. Goto kitchenaid.com and download the parts catalog for your mixer model, these drawings will assist you in the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer.

You'll need to replace the speed control in your mixer. This is a common problem. Be prepared to wait at least a month for your parts to arrive. Unplug your mixer before you open it up.

If you're still under warranty call kitchenaid!

If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45

Kitchen aid mixer turn itsef off

There are several potential reasons why your KitchenAid dough mixer might be shutting off. Here are a few possible causes:
Overheating: If the mixer has been running for an extended period of time, the motor may overheat and shut off as a safety precaution. In this case, you should allow the mixer to cool down for a while before using it again.
Faulty wiring: If the mixer is shutting off when you turn it on or when you change the speed, there may be a problem with the wiring. You should check the wiring to see if there are any frayed or damaged wires that could be causing the issue.
Clogged air vents: The mixer may shut off if the air vents are clogged, as this can cause the motor to overheat. You should check the air vents to make sure they are clean and unobstructed.
Failed motor: If none of the above issues are present, the problem could be with the motor itself. A failed motor can cause the mixer to shut off, and it may need to be replaced.
If you are not comfortable troubleshooting the mixer yourself, you should consider contacting KitchenAid customer service or a professional appliance repair service for assistance.

Kitchenaid Hobart K45SS when set at 1-2 accelerates to high speed when making dough. How can I fix this?

Usually when the mixer runs only on high speed it is caused by the control plate adjusted incorrectly or the control plate spring unhooked. Remove the trim & end cover on the mixer and check the control plate spring, if unhooked, attach to bottom of the control plate and squeeze the spring end, also check the speed control plate screws, there are 3 screws on this plate, one at the bottom two at the top, see if adjusting the top screws slows your mixer down.
Next check the wiring of the mixer, Insure everything is wired correctly, to get wiring diagram go to the last page of the service manual. Here is a link to the service manual: http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf
If neither of those fixes the problem it is probably a bad phase control board, or a shorted phase control board. With the line cord disconnected, pull the t-bar contacts to open and insert a piece of paper between them so they cannot close. Reapply power-the mixer should just run or buzz trying to run, if it operates at full speed the phase control is defective and needs to be replaced.
Use the service manual to aid you in taking apart the mixer, trouble shooting the problem and putting the mixer back together, based on the mixer only running at high speed some of the time I would assume it is the speed control phase board.
If you have any questions let me know.
Thank you,

Mixer won't shut off

Sounds as though the switch has shorted? Or the speed controller has failed ON. You could try a replacement if one can be had?

K45SS cycles on low speed, then has only one higher speed

It sounds like you may have an issue with either the governor assembly and or the main control. If the speed you are getting is constantly going up an down in RPM then this could indicate that the governor has simply become worn and its resistance is gone. If however you get no speed at all and then all of a sudden you get a high speed then it will most likely be the main control. Part number for the governor assembly is 17830. Part number for the main control is 240904−2. Both are relatively simple and cheap to replace. Hope this helps

I need help in correctly reassembling my Kitchenaid KSM 150 mixer. I used the help on the web to successfully take apart, clean and regrease my mixer. However, I have not yet been able to successfully...

First dissconnect the power supply.Next, the locking hook must be facing towards the back of the unit. However the lever itself must be placed inside the bottom portion of the unit going out to the side. Next you need to connect the metal link to the lever and UNDERNEATH the locking hook. Once you have done this you can now put the screw in to hold down the lever. Your one speed problem could be caused by the adjustment screws that are connected to the main board at the bottom. if these are not set correctly and most importantly EVENLY the mixer wont operate correctly. The next possible solution is that the main control board is faulty and would have to be replaced part number for the board is w10119326. Also I have added this link from Whirlpool that you can use. Hope this helps. Thanks

Mixer revs, then shuts off, will not reset

your kitchen aid has a little device inside called the hall effect sensor. These often come dislodged or just stop functioning. If you are mechanically inclined you can replace this yourself.

Mixer speed switch is haunted

The likely problem is the Hall Effect sensor located on top of the motor. This sensor is used to determine the speed of the motor. Since it does not sense a speed, the motor revs to top speed and shuts down. You have to shut the switch to Off/Reset to try again. Replace the sensor which costs under $10 before replacing the speed control which costs $50.

Mixer motor shut down

Mine did almost the exact same thing one day. I have the Artisian Model, It would do it on any of the lowest speeds. Dont know if this will help you or not but I just ran mine the next day on all the way high with the spash guard on for making whipped cream for about 6 minutes full throttle and for some reason it hasnt went slow and shut itself off since then. Mine is about 7 months old. I called Kitchen Aid but their customer service all of a sudden seems to not know english worth a poo...

Try running yours on full blast for 5 minutes with something simple in the bowl. If its a 250 watt or higher make whipped water out of 2 cups of water and a tablespoon of cornstarch. Run it till you get what looks like whipped cream. Oh yea. Use the Balloon whip. The lubrication in the motor is supposed to last for at least 5 years but I have seen on numerous post's that if you run them on all the way for at least 5 minutes the oil will even out in the motor. Running the mixers at low speed alot will cause the oil inside not to move as freely since the motor doesnt heat up the oil in the gears.

Good luck.
