It still springs back like the door is locked, so the handle itself isn't detached from the mechanism. The little piece in the door lock mechanism won't let go once engaged. It comes down but locked or unlocked won't release unless opened from the inside. I have so far tried soaking everything with I can with liquid wrench, hoping it's just something that's corroded. I've done the piece itself with the door open. I've tried lubricating the lock and down the back of the lock, as well as through the window slits. I have not removed the door panel because my fiance would rather take it to the mechanic as the power buttons are now getting to be in poor repair and we don't want to risk me damaging the housing/etc and have to get a $500 replacement. All of that being said, what should I do from here?
The outer handle has a spring to return it built into the handle I think, so the fact that it returns does not mean it isn't disconnected inside the door. Time for a shop I think (are the replacement switches really $500? Might check with a parts store instead of dealer to see if they can supply that part.)

switch is going bad or loose. look under door pad unplug and replug. If it stops and returns to normal it was loose.. If it doesn't either replace switch (maybe expensive) or just unplug and do manually from now on.

To remove the door panel there will be 2-5 screw bolts in places like the door handle and behind switch and handle panels. Remove them then teh panel will either lift straight up or pop out if it is held with panel plugs then use a flat pry tool to pop them out.
It does sound like the regulator which is cable driven and will by basiclly held on the glass and the door with bolts. You will need to move the old motor to the new part.

I had to replace both of the front stops on my 00 Rodeo. It is a common issue so by replacing them it will take care of the problem.
