Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a goodman heat pump and i suspect a bad reversing valve

Had a bad compressor (open motor windings) replaced and now refuses to pump both sides seem equalized at about 105 psi and rise 5-7 psi regardless of the reversing valve being energized or unit running in heat or cool mode.

i have tried tapping with hammer, recovered and purged w/ nitrogen, tried closing high side service valve expecting pressure to shoot up. I get nothing no change to pressure? i will try the torch i understand to be light handed with the heat thanks

also you did evacuate the system and replaced or added the appropriate filter driers first?

you need to take a amp draw to see if your full load amps are in the ball park of the nameplate rating sounds like your reversing valve MAY BE stuck in the middle postion--tap it lightly careful not to dent the valve use a rubber hammer or a piece of wood and notice any difference in the sound and pressure readings keep switching from cool to heat be sure your service valves are fully open at the unit IF it has them ccw be sure your blue hose is hooked to the suction side tap to have correct readings in either heat or cool mode and the red hose high side is hooked outside of the unit on the small line tap you can lightly take your torch and wave across the small tubes at the reversing valve pilot tubes and the valve body to help move any excess oil that may be trapped to hinder its switching DO NOT hold the torch steady at any one spot(especially the reversing valve coil) wave it side to side and with minimal heat applied at any point! just minimal stuff to check most likely others input will be helpful too

Sounds like reversing valve is stuck or metering device or check valve is stuck open. If it is a scroll compressor on 3 phase you may need to reverse 2 motor leads. try tapping reversing valve with rubber mallet when running. This may have done in last compressor by sending discharge gas to suction side.

You may want to check amps while unit is running and check discharge and and suction temp at compressor. Valves may be out in compressor if reciprocator. But that is unlikely. If all else fails recover and test compressor for suction.

The piston is too large. Have a reputable heating and air technician install the proper size piston and this will correct the problem. Cost should be 150.00.

Hello, Usually it has to do with the quality of the install and the brand. If it was not installed properly from the beginning then the equipment will fail prematurely. As far as the heat exchanger goes I have replaced many heat exchangers on Goodmans after 3 years being installed, Goodmans are prone to bad heat exchangers.

Condenser fan will not turn on, although I can hear the relay click. This is a Goodman 3.5 ton unit about 12 yrs old.

Is the compressor running? If not then check the disconnect or fuses. If it is then make sure the fan turns freely and check the fan capacitor. Replace it if it is bad. If the capacitor is good then check the fan motor windings and replace the fan motor if the winding are open. Let me know what you find.

Can not get Goodman 3-ton heat pump out of heat mode and into cooling mode

The reversing valve may be stuck. It allows the unit to switch between heating and cooling. You may be able to give it a tap but only on one of the ends, not the sides, and only lightly. You could also unplug the reversing valve from the circuit board. Some reversing valves are energized in heat mode some in A/C mode. When you unplug it, if it shifts, you will hear a loud hiss as the valve shifts and the pressure equalizes.

First of all is this unit a heat pump i'm not up on goodman model #'s if it is a heat pump reversing valves do go not a real common problem 1000.00 is excessive i would be inclined to get a 2nd opinion. plastic over the sand could create a condensation mold problem. Good luck. Tom

I have a goodman heat pump and all winter it worked fine, now i set it for ac and stil blowing hot air

The reversing valve may be stuck or it has a burnt solenoid coil. Also, check the defrost relay accross the contacts with an ohmmeter and see if it's bad. Goodman heat pumps also trip on high pressure. There's a resettable switch on some units with a red button. However, I think the problem is in the defrost circuit or reversing valve. If your electric heat is on, change the board.

Goodman heatpump. Crazy pressure in heat mode

Check the TXV valve on the outdoor unit, it could be stuck closed. We have been experiencing the same problems with the 410 systems and the TXV was the culprit. Good Luck

I can't seem to get my pressures up on a new 3 ton 13 seer goodman? High side 200psi low 50psi not cooling the house

You might have a bad valve on compressor.Close valve on high side and see if the low side pumps down. Of course you should have your gages hooked up.If your low side doesn't pump down you have a bad valve.
