Question about ViewSonic VX710 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

Open Question

Viewsonic 710 comes on then after 3 seconds shuts off

Problem was addressed with the vx715 model but what about the vx710. Capacitor numbering is different and there is no obvious burnout of any area on the main board?

SOURCE: ViewSonic VX710 On and off

On every one of these monitors that I've repaired this issue has been due to badly overheated, blown capacitors. On one it was a single cap that cost 80 cents. On this model I had one that had 5 bad caps on the power board and it cost several dollars. Usually the bad ones are obvious sometimes I've had to do the simple ohm meter test. All have been easy fixes: a trip to the electronics store and a little soldering.

Yes, do look for caps with bulging tops as shown in my pictures, you should replace them in a set.

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools, electronics knowledge, and know safety precaution then please read on:

Or, just make sure to use caps with low ESR, 105c, high ripple current and long life rating such as PANASONIC FM or FC series.
Please post back what you find.

Have just upgraded to windows 7 and my Viewsonic vx715 is only recognised as a generic PnP monitor and I can't load drivers from disc supplied. monitor is approx 6yrs old and still going fine!

In most cases you don't need the drivers for a monitor to work completely fine. In order to obtain your drivers you can always check the manufacturers website and they should have drivers listed, in your case they do. Although I couldn't locate VX715 i found many VX models in the driver search. There should be one that works fine, just make sure you download the right right IE: windows 7 x32/86 if your running a 32-bit operating system, or windows 7 x64 if you are running a 64 bit operating system. Here is the website I located

My viewsonic vx710 lcd monitor shuts off after @ a hour of operation then won't come on for @15 minutes

Check the power supply section first.
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed VIEWSONIC monitors to get some ideas what to look for:
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

fixing a LCD monitor require you to have some basic electronic know how.. changing the backlight won't be easy as you need to dismantle the whole LCD right to the screen..
But if the display only lasted for few minutes and then the whole screen turn dark, this is due to bad component on the board.. most probably capacitor...

Viewsonic VX710 17" Flat Panel Display. It turns on and after 1 or 2 Seconds shuts the backlight off L.E.D. satys on but the backlight won't comeback on. No cap seems to be blown up.

Failed cap amy not show any sign of bulging or leaking, it can still have high ESR. You can also have components failure in the inverter circuits such as shorted inverter transformer driver transistors, open or short winding (DC Ohm test will not show shorted turn, need to use ringer test), I use SENCORE LC75 for testing, bad lamps or bad soldering works on the lamps. See for some guide.

You may have bad transformers, need to be checked, DC Ohms meter may not be enough, need to use inductor tester (I use Sencore LC75). You can also have bad lamps (bad solder connections). The caps may not have any sign of bulging but can have high ESR, see some pictures here for guide:

The "back light" has probably failed. If you shine a light on the monitor while on, you might see that the program is displaying, but because the light is out, it can't be seen easily.

The back light is a fluorescent lamp or tube that may be difficult to access, depending on your level of ability and tools available. While most lamps can be purchased for relatively little money, it may not solve the problem. Like all fluorescent lights in your home or work, there is a second major part - the ballast. If either of these fails, the result is no light.

Lights and ballasts (sometimes called inverters) are specific to monitor model and costs can vary significantly. You should determine costs for your monitor and decide whether or not taking the monitor apart is something you want to do before buying the parts.
