Question about Troy Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower
I had the same problem and it was my kill switch on the left of the motor the cable hooks up to the plate was sticking so when you hold the lever it doesn't disengage the kill switch fully i sprayed wd40 all through the plate to lube it up try that hope it works

You willneed to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner.
Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.
If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.
