Take a paperclip and clean out the small hole on your gas cap. And yes I am being serious.

You have a fuel governor problem. This governor works the carburetor allowing the right amount of fuel. When the mower comes under a load the governor opens up allowing more fuel to the carburetor. If the governor is bad or it is out of adjustment (adjustments can be made using a screwdriver). You might say that when, the governor fails to supply fuel correctly, there isn't fuel enough to operate the motor to carry the extra load, the motor has to speed up,if not,it will die from fuel starvation. It will start right up if the mower is disengaged and probably will idle alright and the tractor will move, but not under a heavy load condition. This adjustment should have been done at the factory. A full throttle condition, doesn't always mean that the mower can carry a heavy load condition, without the governor operating correctly.Hope this helps,i can't really tell if it's the governor,is the culprit without actually hearing the governor kick in. Sincerely,Brad Locke

Why does my Briggs and Stratton 18.5 Intek V Twin start then stalls out immediately

I will need model and type and exactly what you're doing when it stalls, i.e., are you trying to engage the blades? Or it may simply be a fuel issue.

I have a craftsman mower with the B&S 21hp Intek OHV motor, it starts fine but when you go to engage the blade or go forward or backward or release the parking brake it will die unless you disengage...

Check the switch on the seat, of all places. There's a safety switch on the seat that will kill the engine if it's not engaged when do anything other than start and run the engine.

If the switch checks out, get back with me.

Check the govenor spring to see that it is not stretched out or popped off...there should be a colored spring on the throttle plate where the throttle lever connects to...also, there are several holes in the plate where the spring attaches...these hole will set the sensitivity of the may need to make it more sensitive to hold the engine speed high when engaging the blades

B&S Intek OHV 18hp muffler glows red hot

sounds like its running too rich on fuel. try turning the fuel mixture screw in 1/4 turn at a time til it starts to stall then turn out 1/4 turn or 2 and see if that helps.Maybe when you used the air it turned this screw???

18hp B&S wont slow down no matter where

It's one of two things. Most likely, the screw(s) have come out of the butterfly valve on the throttle shaft and letting it run wide open. The second thing is that the governor gear inside the engine broke. Unless you a pretty good mechanic, I'd recommend taking it to a shop. If it is just the butterfly in the carb, you still have to deal with...where did the screws go? They may have passed through the intake and exhaust valves or they may be stuck in one of the valve seats or embedded in the piston. Like I said, better take it to a trusted shop, if there is such a thing, unless you live close to me. lol.
