Question about Pentair PUREX MINIMAX HEATER; THERMOSTAT, 60 CAPILLARY - 072022

Triton minimax 400 pool heater won't ignite

Power is clearly getting to the heater because the green light comes on. Filter is clean, seems to be getting a good flow of water through it. Gas is on.

We have a Purex Triton Minimax 400. A spa repairman just left and determined that the water flow unit or valve is bad. It seemed to think there was no water flowing through the heater. Thanks for your time and I hope my post helps others.

Multiple conditions must be met before main burner fires; model number is important; is it a PowerMax, NT series or just a MiniMax millivolt heater?

Make sure the gas valve is set to on and thermostats are set properly. Check the pressure switch and high limits for continuity.Check wires for signs of damage, etc..

SOURCE: Purex Triton Minimax 400 pool/spa heater not igniting

This sounds like you have a problem with your pilot. You can check this with a small mirror to see if their is a spark when you turn it on. If you have any soot build up on the pilot that will stop the spark and keep it from lighting also. If you have a short on your pilot wire this could be the problem also. I hope this helps, good luck.

MasterTemp 400K BTU heater kicks on for 20sec. and starts shaking, then turns off and repeat itself. Everytime it kicks on we smell gas as well. Water flow seems to be OK in spa and pool.

Even though you are smelling gas it could mean the gas flow is not strong enough.
When you say the water flow seems good, have you cleaned your filter recently?

If you are somewhat handy you can troubleshoot this heater by taking off the front panel turning it on and looking up to the back of the circuit board.
When it shuts off it will have red lights next to abbreviated words such as hl1 hl2.

Whichever light or lights are red will point you in the right direction of the cause.

Mini max my power light comes on but my pressure sw does not light up

Try cleaning the filter, or check the water flow. It's sensing not enough water flow through your system.

Rheem rte13 standby (green) light not on

You might have crossover problem caused by bad faucet cartridge.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Crossover.html

The green standby light should come on when 240Volt power is applied. Page 6 manual.
Both red lights should come on when tankless is activated. Page 6 manual

RTE 13 requires 60 amp breaker and 6 gauge wire
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-Tankless-electric-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Rheem-TanklessElectricUC_AP15447.pdf

Factory temperature setting is usually default 120 degrees.
Adjust temps page 11 manual
Thermostat calibration is always approximate.
120 degrees is not hot enough to burn the skin.
Exceptionally cold incoming water temperature can cause tankless not to heat enough hot water: install tempering tank to preheat water to room temperature.
Tankless cannot be exposed to more than 11 grains hardness in water. Delime tankless yearly, clean water filter monthly, do not install low-flow restrictions or conserve water since the flow rate must remain high for tankless to activate.
Rheem does not post service manuals for their tankless water heaters.

PILOT LIGHT KEEPS GOING OUT.

If the pilot flame is weak, when the main burner is ignited, there can be enough 'whoosh' of air and gas to blow out the pilot. There may be a little of grit in the pilot valve jet hole restricting the flow, hence the weak flame. Try using a piece of fine wire to clear the obstruction. If that does not help the pilot jet will have to be unscrewed and cleaned with compressed air. Ensure the gas is turned off before attempting any maintenance.

The boiler just wont start up, possibly the pilot light??

You probally just picked up enough dirt to clog the filter enough to shut the heater down. If the water flow slows enough the heater will boil the water inside it You have a presure switch in the heater to avoide this. All you probally have to do is clean the filter and baskets to get enough flow to start it again.

Pool heater will not fire up

Check for proper flow at your pump and at the return jets. You have to sustain proper water flow in order of rthe heater to function properly. If the flow is adequate, then use a jumper lead across the pressure switch terminals on the heater and see if it will fire and remain on. If so then the pressure switch is either faulty or you have a flow problem which is not generating enough water pressure to trip the switch. DO NOT adjust the pressure switch, as it is factory set. Check your pump for a clogged inlet or other possible blockage before the heater.

Ok I cant find a model number on the heater, it has some info like Gulf Stream super heater, scroll inside and Titanium inside, 106,000 BTU The pool filter gets cleaned every monday by a pool service...

There are a few things that can cause a heater to not fire up. One is, if the flow sensor is not working. There can be sufficient flow, but if the heater cannot sense it, it will not light up. Make sure that there is enough flow. Another possibility is there could be a build up on the thermal couple or the burners that is interfering. Those do need periodic cleaning. You should be able to check the thermal couple without disassembling the gas line. I would not recommend tampering with the gas system unless you are confident with what you are doing. If you feel uncomfortable with something, it is probably a good idea to contact a professional.

High pressure, and heater noise

I am not sure if you have solved this issue, or not, but if the PSI on the gauge is high then the problem may not be the heater. When you have the system turned on, and the PSI is reading higher than normal, just the flow of water coming out your return lines. If the flow is normal, like when you clean your filter, then see if you have a way to re-route the water so it bypasses the heater. If the PSI on gauge drops, then the issue is in the heater.

If the flow of water is slower than normal, with the PSI reading high, then you have a blockage somewhere in the system. It could be something simple like removing debris from skimmer and pump backets, to time to backwash, or clean, the filter.

If the flow of water is really hard and fast, with the PSI high as well, then you have too much water going through the system and need to slow it down.
