Question about Gateway GT5082 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I started having issues with my GT5082 shortly after installing SP3 from microsoft. My video would go wacky and then return to normal. Now, my PC is dead. It will power-on but will not get past POST. I have no beeps, no video. I have checked the power supply outputs, reset the 4 RAM cards a few times, reseated the CPU and checked all the cables. I see no caps being bad on the MOB or inside the PS. How do I know what is bad without any BIOS codes? I'd appreciate any insight you may have.

Thanks Baker, but I think I'm beyond an XP disk. I have no HD output, no video output, no CD output. If it happened to be an installation issue with SP3, I would think the crash would have been more immediate and not gradual as it were. It's leaning more towards a hardware failure; MOB or CPU. I can't get a POST code so I was hoping someone with a good bit of hardware troublehooting experience could identify the culprit by symptoms alone. Or at least point me in the right direction. I appreciate your time though.

The installation of SP3 didn't finalize or it had complications. Your computer is "freaking out" because your missing things that windows needs to boot. If you have your XP disc insert it and reinstall or Fix the missing pieces. It will automatically find it for you

Gateway gt5082: usb not working, on the motherboard and front. i have installed a new hd and installed the new recover gateway cd that came w/the computer. still nothing.

If you reinstalled operating system then it means it's a hardware issue. You'll have to check the internal connections from motherboard to front panel. I'd also poke around the bios setup page to see if it was accidentally turned off. It's not likely the case, but it's always best to check.

Hope this tidbit of info gets you going. Let me know if you get stuck or have a specific follow up question.

Am trying to download Office 2010,but the comp. tells me I am not running the XP sp3. How do I fix this ? My comp. does automatic updates.

Manually install the updates by going to the Microsoft Update website. Click start, select all programs, and select Windows update. Allow the updates to download and install. Continue to update until all have been installed. You may have to return to the update page several times before Service Pack 3 can be downloaded and installed.

Service pack 2 for xp crashes the system

Access http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
and download XP Service Pack 3, and install it.

It is *NOT* necessary to install SP2 _before_ installing SP3.

After installing, run Windows Update (for another 80+ updates issued since SP3 was issued).

My computer only boots successfully after a forced shutdown.

Is it possible that you have installed winxp twice? You say that you installed XP Pro sp3 was that an upgrade from xp home? if so then you will need to uninstall one or both versions of XP then install only one.. Make sure you backup any important files first though

On March 6, 2008 Microsoft released Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP. Service Pack 3 contains all of the important Windows updates from previous service packs as well as additional updates that were released after Service Pack 2. To install Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the Internet on a home desktop computer use the Windows Update feature. CAUTION: If you have an HP Pavilion, HP Media Center or Compaq Presario desktop computer that has an AMD processor, your PC might encounter a startup problem after installing SP3 (or SP3 will not download from Windows Update). Before attempting to install SP3, install sp37394 - Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Upgrade Utility for systems with AMD processors . Xp sp3 wireless not working properly

You can try this WPA patch for SP3

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=009D8425-CE2B-47A4-ABEC-274845DC9E91&displaylang=en

If this does not work you can revert back to SP2 by

Click start then control panel then go to add/remove programs. Look for Service Pack 3 and remove

If that does not work you can also do a system restore by

Click start then run then type in msconfig
Click on launch system restore.
Restore to a date before your SP3 update.
Note: All other installations after this date will be lost
Your files will NOT be lost

Not Installing XP SP3 Updates Given By Microsoft KB 936929.

if you don't want to install those updates you should have switch off your automatic updates. the problem is the your computer might not be compaitble with the update which was sent to you.XP SP3 have a higher system and hardware requirements than xp sp2. in order to resolve your problem you need to run your xp sp2 and press repair instead of format in this way it can return to your original system. you can also try the system restore press the start, all programs look for the system tools then system restore check what date you installed this sp3 then select the day before you installed this in order for you to return to your original operating system. hoping that this will help you, expecting your positive response.
