My IBM T40 boots to a black screen with the "z"(light at top to right of power.

Try these steps:

1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter
2. Press power on button for 30 seconds or so (one min is also too)
3. Attach battery and plug into wall
4. Power "ON" as normal

If you are still getting the "Z" and a black screen then I would have the video card or hard drive looked at and replaced. Start with the video card and then look at the hard drive

Will not boot... black screen?

Try removing the battery completely and powering it up on AC power. Sometimes a dead battery (even if you're plugged in to AC) will stall a boot-up in its tracks. If this doesn't help, please reply back and let me know if anything changed.

Green light, black screens, no sound, needs new battery???

The alarm is just a coincidence i suspect, green light comes on and stays on probably not the battery at fault. It would be red.
If the green light goes out and screens just flash one of your screens are at fault or a loose ribbon connection.

Laptop Not booting - No Screen

Clean your memory card, or reseat it. Clean the edge connector with soft eraser if reseating doesn't solve it. Do this when battery is disconnected, completely turn off and no other power supply is connected to it. If not maybe ram failed already. This is the first step before going to anything. For additional instructions try to find it in youtube. Post us some update.tnx

this is most likely the sustainer board(s) problem. Replacing the sustainer boards should correct this problem for you. you can get the parts at vancebaldwin.com

Screen stays blank when turned on

take your computer to your dealer and send it for repair.

The problem is most likely the inverter for the screen.
actually to see if that is the problem you can try to put bright light to the screen and see if you barely see the picture.

Ibm thinkpad turn on no work

If you're not getting any external display action then that means it's probably a motherboard issue / hardware issue.

First thing you're gonna want to try is reseating the memory and trying to boot the computer with the battery out.

Second, if that doesn't work next thing you can try is removing the cmos battery (with the battery and power adapter out) and letting it sit for 5 minutes with the cmos battery out.

Also, do you get any led lights or any kind of action from the laptop (fans, beeps, etc.)?

Ibm thinkpad laptop wont start

The BIOS/CMOS backup battery is probably due for replacement; that system has a few years on it and the coin cells are good for maybe 5 years.

If you don't have your original user guide, you can get the maintenance manual here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-4PER6R.html

It will contain battery replacement info.

My ibm thinkpad booting and hanging fault

Try this... to see if your video card is bad...
Connect your laptop to an external monitor and press the Function key plus F5 on the laptop... if your OS shows up on the monitor screen, then you have a bad video card...

If its not the video, Bad Ram might be the cause.
And worst case.. Need Motherboard replaced...
