Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

Hi Leadtech, I have a Mitsubishi VS-50111 projector TV. This set was purchased new Feb 2004 and was used very little; the set was in working condition when it was placed into storage in June 2005. Two week ago (6/11/09) I took the set out of storage and moved from the East Coast to the West Coast of the U.S.; after unloading it when I got it home (06/21/09), I plugged it in and turned it on... the green power light on the front of the TV stays on for about two seconds and then the set turns off. I did a little research on this and ran the diagnostics, which produced an error code of 23 (two flashes -- a pause -- and then three flashes, which repeats five times, and indicates the HV Deflection to be the problem. I suspect a capacitor has dried up and is 'open', which is causing the problem, as I can't think of any other components that could go bad from the set just sitting, in a powered off state. The only problem is, I can't figure out which capacitor it might be, without desoldering capacitors and checking them... would you be able to provide me with any advice, or a better way to troubleshoot the problem? Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated! (my e-mail address is listed below). By the way, are there any troubleshooting manuals for this set? I have only been able to locate a Service Manual (in PDF format) on-line. Sincerely, David 14:53 PDT 06/27/2009 e-mail address: r505te@yahoo.com

    Hello WelcomeJee,

I was wondering if you would mind clairifying what you mean by "check X-Ray protection is activated or not on Pin-8 of IC5A00 or collector pin of transistor Q5A20 that should be low."

By this, do you mean to put the proble of my meter on these two points? If so, what value should I be reading, i.e., Volts, Ohms, etc., and what is an acceptable value?

I have the schmatics for the TV, and I have the PCB's slid out partially on the tray, so I could look underneath and see if a capacitor was leaking.

Thank you for your assistance... it is greatly appreciated!

    Hello WelcomeJee,

I tried your suggestions; I re-soldered several connections that looked bad (the solder was very dull in color, but I could not see any cracks, even with a microscope). On IC5A00, there are 8 pins -- pin number 6 is missing, so the last pin is numbered 9 but is the 8th pin at the end of the IC; I checked the voltage between this pin and ground (with the TV plugged in but not switched on) and the voltage measured 0.64 VDC with a DMM (I didn't use a VOM -- does it matter?).

The capacitor C5A64 appears okay, i.e., no bulges or leakage around the case, but this doesn't mean that it is a good capacitor... would you recommend changing this capacitor anyway?

So I am still stuck trying to fix this TV... any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help... I appreciate it!

    Sincerely,

    David

CHECK THE VOTAGE AT PIN NO.2 OF FLYBACK TRANSFORMER. iT SHOULD BE 110V. iF IT DROPS DOWN DISCONNECT MOSFET Q5A51 AND RELATED COMPONENT AND CHEK THE VOLTAGE. IF IT IS STEADY, REPLACE THE MOSFET. IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT SOLVED AFTER REPLACING THE MOSFET, THE FBT MAY BE DEFECTIVE.

Hi,
I think you should check cold solder joints on main board (power supply, deflection board) and resold.
Colder solder joint does not look shiny as compare to nearby good solder joint and you will see cracks with close look.
Your TV complete service manual is available in Manual Zone for small fee, if you need that.
Below is an image marked with to check X-Ray protection is activated or not on Pin-8 of IC5A00 or Collector pin of Transistor Q5A20 that should be low.
These are possible causes of no horizontal deflection in this TV.
Let me know further question.
Thanks.

    Thanks for query,
Volts will be tested with VOM and black lead at ground of TV and red lead to test volt on pin-8 of said IC.
Volts should be approx 2 or 3 dc in normal condition and if protection is ON that pin would show 9 volt.
Leaking capacitor can be checked on component side as you will see top of capacitor is bulged or some liquid on base of capacitor on PCB.
    Thanks.

Nope, But your convergenjce chip is about to die. i would turn it off and leave it off and call a tech to rectify it before it takes out the whole board or all 3 as some capacitors are also overheating. Parts $100+Labour of about 1.5 hrs at this stage! later it will be $600

I own a Mitsubishi HD 1080 series HD TV; MODEL#VS-50111. Recently the TV shut itself off after a few minutes of operation. I unplugged it and after a few hours, plugged it in and it came on for about 5...

I believe it is going to be a major repair and I would hesitate to invest much money into it. I think the age of this set is older than 5 years. The VS model series were manufactures before the WS model series and they have been around for 8 years or so. Never the less, parts availability is getting tougher. If your pain thresh hold is 300.00 or 400.00
go for it. If not, check out new sets.
Hope this helps,

Where are the fuses for mitsubishi 50111 located and what do they look like?

There is only one user serviceable fuse on the TV set on the PC board, near where the power cored enters the TV (you will need to remove the back to check this fuse (it is labeled F9D00).

The other five fuses look like small resistors and will require desoldering to replace -- I wouldn't recommend doing this without testing the fuses with a Ohmeter first, to determine if they are bad.
