I had the same problem. Using the EH40 and an 80 gallon hot water heater with 10/2 wire, I took the black wire from the panel and put it into #3, the white wire to #5, the black wire from the hot water heater to #4, the white wire (red at heater) to #6, then used the jumper wires as described to connect #1 to #3, and #2 to #5. Unfortunately NOTHING HAPPENED! Hitting the reset button for a few seconds didn't help at all. I got no readout on the panel, (though with installing the battery that did work), and the LOAD light never came on.

PLEASE HELP!!!! What could I be doing wrong? Is there any way to see if the controller is working correctly?

I have a timer that won't hold the program time set schedule? I have paid an electrician to come out and check to make sure i don't have any shorted out wires?? Electrician didn't find any...

Question posted under 120volt Intermatic Eh10 timer.
I do not have repairs for defective timer.
EH10 has 1 year limited warranty.

Located just below the digital display is compartment for AA battery.
Display is controlled by battery.
Replace battery, press and hold reset button for several seconds to reset timer, and try to program again.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-EH40-hot-water-heater-timer.html#EH10
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/eh10-manual.pdf

EH10 and EH40 timers are susceptible to line noise.
If timer is connected to water heater, there is no line noise. And electrician tested for shorting wires.
But when timer is connected to fan, pump, or other type of load, then interference can be a problem.
Intermatic can provide a filter.

Digital timers, digital water heaters, digital washer and dryer, digital water softener, digital treadmill, etc are increasingly common, yet are not protected from surge.
People protect computers and TVs, but forget other costly items.
EH10 can be affected by surge.
Install whole house surge protection:

When power is applied load one reads o.k. load two reads zero why?

You posted under EH40 240Volt programmable timer.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-EH40-hot-water-heater-timer.html

If I understand correctly, you are testing the terminals when timer turns ON?
Test shows 120V between terminal 4 and ground wire.
Test shows 0 volts between terminal 6 and ground wire.

Solution:
Test terminal 3 to ground -and- test terminal 5 to ground and make sure each tests 120V.
Test terminal 3 to terminal 5 for 240V.

If terminals 3 and 5 test correctly, but terminal 6 never has power, then relay inside timer has gone bad.

EH40 Manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/eh40-manual.pdf

1) EH40 uses size A battery. Replace battery.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-EH40-hot-water-heater-timer.html#Battery
2) Reset the timer: Press and hold reset button for several seconds
3) Contact Intermatic because they are aware of specific problems with specific timers
http://www.intermatic.com/customer%20service.aspx
4) Other folk have reported EH40 and EH10 last about 3 years.
EH40 has 1 year limited warranty.
I test timers: 7 years is reasonable run for inexpensive electronic time switch.
5) For longer lasting timer, consider Next Generation: battery is replaced every 8 years

The spring that turns off the power in my Intermatic WH21 timer is broken. Where can I buy a new spring?

Parts are not available for WH21 240V water heater timer.
Timer has 1 year limited warranty.
http://www.intermatic.com/customer%20service/frequently%20asked%20questions.aspx
WH21 is rated for 25Amps and works on water heaters up to 4500Watts.
Look at label on side of tank to see wattage.
WH21 is SPST and turns off one hot wire to water heater.

I ran a business for many years.
Cost of stocking, organizing, and shipping parts is near same cost as new timer.

Following page shows selection of replacement timers:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Boxtype.html

For example, I have tested WH40 and T104 and other timers that show on page.
Trippers and motors are available for Intermatic box timers WH40 and T104, so you can maintain these specific models for many years.
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/timer-accessories/timers/electrical/ecatalog/N-8hi
WH40 and T104 timers are SPDT and turn off both hot wires to water heater.
Both timers will work on any wattage residential water heater

My EH40 is not supplying power to the water heater. I hooked the power line in to posts 1 and 2 and I hooked the load out to posts 4 and 6. When I use my power checker it reads no power to posts 3,4,5,...

I have an EH 40 sitting in front of me right now.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-EH40-hot-water-heater-timer.html
The link above shows correct 240V water heater timer wiring for EH40
Link below shows an overview picture of EH 40 connected to 240V water heater
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/EH40-water-heater-circuit-5.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/240-v-water-heater-circuit.html

EH40 has a 240V clock.
Terminals 1 and 2 send power to the 240V clock
Power to the clock terminals do not pass through timer to any other terminal

How to wire EH40 for 240V
240V line has 2 hot wires from breaker box.
Lets call these wires Hot1 and Hot2
These wire are interchangeable on 240V circuit
Hot1 connects to terminal 1 with a jumper to terminal 3 (or connect to 3 and jumper to 1)
Hot2 connects to terminal 2 with a jumper to terminal 5 (or connect to 5 and jumper to 2)

240V circuit has 2 wires going to the Load
Let's call these Load1 and Load2
These wires are interchangeable on 240V circuit
Load1 connects to terminal 4
Load2 connects to terminal 6

If the timer is still not working, go back to the breaker and test if it is delivering 240V to the circuit.
If breaker is bad on one leg, then the circuit can test with live power, but the 240V appliance will not work.
240V circuit requires both legs of 240V before circuit is complete.

After hooking up line wires to motor and load wires from water heater to load terminals, diasgram shows jumper wires from terminbal 1 to terminal 3 and terminbal 2 to tertmninal 5. voltage is 240.thank you ...

That is correct.

LINE 1 (incoming hot wire from source or circuit breaker) connects to terminal #1 then jumps over to terminal #3 using the _same_ gauge wire.

LINE 2 (other incoming hot wire from source or circuit breaker) connects to terminal #2 then jumps over to terminal #5.

The LOAD (outgoing to water heater) then connects to terminals 4 and 6.

How to wire an intermatic eh40 water heater timer

Note that the "IMPORTANT!" paper insert that came with my EH40 shows one small jumper between 1 & 5 and the second small jumper between 2 & 3 (and, of course, the jumpers aren't really long enough to reach from 1 to 5!). Jumping 1&3, 2&5 makes more sense and matches the labeling on the plastic insulator piece...
