Question about Zoeller M53 Mighty Mate Iron Body, Poly Base Automatic Sump Pump 1/3 HP

2 Answers

Zoeller sump pump, outside in stairwell. Rainstorm, alarm goes off, i look out, does not seem to be running or maybe it was not sure, rain was slowing down so I silenced the alarm and went back to bed. In hindsight, I should have turned off the power. I was not very awake. Next day I get a call from my son, pump is running, no water in the well and he described smoke or stream not sure which. I told him to shut off the breaker which he did. I have removed the pump, cleaned out the basin which was a mess, put it all back together and filled it up with water. It makes no noise, gurgles a little, after 20 minutes or so I shut it off. Went to drain the water and it was hot. Maybe a little oily too. Not sure if I fried this thing or what I should do now.

Zoeller pumps are pretty indestructable. Typically, the only thing that goes on them is the switch, which is $20 and easily replaced. The other thing I finally learned after many long battles with these is that IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU KEEP THE SMALL BLEEDER HOLE BY THE BASE CLEAR (also usually another one by the check valve). If you don't, the pump won't work nearly as well, and may not pump at all.

Sorry to say, but it does sound like the pump is fried. It should come on(run) when it's plugged in. The fact that the water surrounding the pump was hot is a good sign that the pump was way over-heated. Also, that oil in the water is likely from the pump. Oil is used in the pump for lubrication and to water proof the inside of the pump.
The only thing I can recommend is to see if the bottom of the pump has a removable strainer or plate, and if so, see if debris has gotten inside and bound up the impeller.

Zoeller Pump M57

The only "easy fix" may be a stuck float switch. First make sure the outlet where the pump is plugged in works. Plug something into the outlet such as a work light to confirm the outlet is live. The float switch may be stuck in the OFF position. Giggle the float arm up and down several times to see if the pump comes on.> You can spry wd40 into the switch where the arm enters. If this does not work, the pump probably needs servicing.

I had to reinstall float on my M53 but am not sure if the weight in the float needs to be on the bottom or top when installed

I'm not expert but have two M53 Zoeller sumps, one in the pit another as a spare which I plan on rebuilding. The weight on the float is at the bottom of both. Hope that helps.

Water backing up into my basement ejector pump during heavy rain

I have seen this problem several times before. The ejector pump should be in a separate crock in the ground by itself. Someone has installed it in the crock that is meant to pump out drain water. Probably the result of adding a bathroom in the basement. You need to bust another hole in the floor and install a separate crock to solve this problem correctly. If it just started happening go outside and look at he gutters to make sure water is running away from the house and not up against the foundation.
