Question about Microwave Ovens

2 Answers

I have a KitchenAid KHMS145kss, over-range microwave hood combination. Is there any easy way to check if it is installed as non-venting/recirculating or vented? We have an external vent, but i am not sure if teh unit is hooked up to it. The integral vent does blow (back into teh kicthen) when the fan is on.

Now that the microwave is already installed, is there a way to knwo whether it was installed in venting or non-venting mode, short of uninstalling and reinstalling the microwave?

That was a great answer, and very helpful. Thanks very much....

If the venting is to the outside - the air will not come back and recirculate at all.

When you install the microwave - you actually MUST remove the fan assembly and rotate it - essentially blanking off the interior vent.

To check for SURE - simply drop the microwave. It is held in place with 2 bolts in the top cabinet.
Take 1 bolt all the way out... then re - install it 3-4 turns.

Then back out the other one until the front of the microwave tilts down far enough to see the vent at the back.

If you see a hole there - the venting is to the outside.

If there is a silver metal cover - the venting is inside.
SEE THIS DIAGRAM - #18 is the blanking plate of your unit.

One less intrusive way to check the vent while cooking. Go outside and feel for heat, air flow, or moisure while heating or venting from the stove.

You don't. If it's doing that, there's something wrong with it. It needs to be replaced.

Looking to replace the plastic piece on the vertical edge of the door (handle side) on my Kitchenaid Microwave/Hood combo khms145kss1. Is it possible to just replace this instead of purchasing the entire...

They don't show the entire door assembly as being available.

But you can replace the outer door frame (outer door panel)part number 8184319.

At $167.94, it's not cheap. But you can get it here.

You have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screw(s) you need to remove.

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.

In some cases, you then have to gently rotate the handle to unlock it.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.
