I have been asked to look at a Brother MFC-6490CW Multifunction printer. The problem is, I cannot do anything with it since the power instantly comes on when the device is plugged in but it does not initiate the startup sequence. The LCD screen lights up but displays no characters of any kind. The numeric pad also lights up, but none of the buttons will react, not even the "clear" or "power" button. I can't even install the drivers so as to test the device. The machine does not process anything, the print heads don't initiate, and it doesn't make even a single sound. Has anyone run into this situation before. Can't seem to get in touch with Brother for any kind of answer. Thanks!

If the regular cleaning does not work, you can try the power purge. Perform it by doing the following:
If it doesn't work, you'd probably need chemicals to clean the ink tubes. But, this power purge should work.
Connect the printer with a USB cord to the computer. Switch off the printer and install the driver in to your computer , during installation the software will tell you to switch-on the . Do so and finish the installation .
This is the procedure to connect the printer with your computer.

The following may work: remove all the ink supplies. Remove the printhead and soak it for about 5 minutes in 0.5" of very hot water. Gently blot the printhead on a soft damp paper towel to remove the excess water, then replace in the printer and then reinstall the ink supplies.
