Replaced the motherboard due to cap failure causing the heatsink error, got it together, turned it on and got a buzzing noise with no video.

You've got your speaker wires on the wrong pins on the MB.

SOURCE: Buzzing noise on boot up, about four buzzes.

The first thing to check would be the CMOS to see if there is a setting for "case intrusion" or something to that effect. Some computers have sensor that goes off the computer's side panel is opened. I believe this can be disabled in the CMOS and/or it's just a wire connected to the motherboard that can be disconnected.

It could also be an important fan, like the CPU fan, isn't spinning fast enough which may or may not lead to an over-heated CPU.

Also check to be sure all the memory sticks are firmly seated.

If it doesn't look like any of those it could always the the power supply. See if you can borrow one for a little while for testing purposes just to see if it works.

If none of those pan out I would say call Dell support and see what they say.

SOURCE: my dell dimention 9200 makes a buzzing noise and no show on monit

Sounds like its just 1 of the fans inside the case needs replacing or possibly the fan inside the power supply. These dont cost much and are easy to replace.

SOURCE: My dell plex gx620 will turn on make some weird

I have the same problem. I think it might be that the computer is not powering on all the way do to overheating. Try replaceing the CPU fan.

Dell optiplex sx280 fans to loud! How do I turn them down?

1) Tell them to be quiet. The kids are sleeping.

2) Promise them a nice quiet vacation in the Bahamas, if they will just be quiet for now.

3) In a firm voice tell them that they CAN be replaced.

OR,
1) Suggest you replace the Thermal Paste on the Processor.
It has dried out.

2) Also clean the inside of the computer out. Suggest it is dirty inside.

(Wuz trying to just be funny................Alan?....................Alan?)

The top of a Processor (CPU), and the bottom of the fined Heatsink that sits on it; are not perfectly smooth.
A magnified view would detail, 'Ridges, Valleys, and Pitholes'.

When the two parts are mated together, Air Pockets are created.

Air is an Insulator in this case, Not a Conductor.
Thermal Paste fills the above imperfections, and is an Excellent conductor of heat.

Thermal Paste dries up over time. Looses it's thermal conductivity properties.

It's cheap in cost.

Can guide you step by step in replacing the Thermal Paste, and also cleaning out the inside of the computer.

How to fix your dead Dell Optiplex-SX280

If the Dell Optiplex-SX280 doesn't boot anymore.
This means totally dead, only clicking sound from internal buzzer and blinking power button led.
Look to the "big" Capacitors top cap.
If they are pushed above you have to replace them.
Fixed, see below link

IN dell optiplex sx280 model system we are using in this amber power led blinking continuly yellow color because of this not able to boot the system. kindly give the solution for the same

Hi there!

A blinking amber/orange light on the power button of your Dell Optiplex means a hardware failure. If you know how to strip down your computer to basic component, then I suggest you turn on with only the motherboard, processor, memory and PSU. If you are not familiar with this, I suggest you bring the computer to a qualified technician.

Hope this helps

I have OptiPlex SX280, processor runs at 100 % for few minutes and the PC reboots. I have cleaned the fans in the case? What could be causing the PC to reboot.

Hi Jerrvk, These Dell SX280's are plagued with bad capacitors, Afewtr about 4 or five years of use the capacitors star6t5 budging and leaking electrolytic acid, The only fix is to hace the Caps replaced on the motherboard. We jsu got a whole load of these last week and are replacing the caps on the ones that are fixable. If you know someone that works on electronic this fix is really inexpencive. The Caps cost between $.60 to $1.50 each. Find someone that know how to solder real good, Have them inspect your motherboard, They will see the caps that are buldging on top. The ones under the hard drive are usally the ones that go first. Good Luck and let us know how you make out. pc_techserv

OptiPlex SX280 PC Desktop: Blue screen, ran diagnostics, chatted with Dell to...

You'll have to make a backup of it before you reload. But I was wondering, if you have found via the diagnostics that a possible hardware component has failed why do you need to reload the OS?

Another thing to look for on this model of Dell is capacitors on the motherboard that may have become swollen or burst. Dell had a series of defective motherboards in this era, and your model is one of the ones affected.

Of course, if the motherboard has swollen caps, you'll have to replace it, unless somehow its still under warranty and then dell will send you a new one.

I have a dell dimension 2400. My starts up fine

Most likely a motherboard issue.

Also ensure the CPU Heatsink is firmly attached. If the heatsink is loose, replace the plastic heatsink retainer

If it is secure, then the motherboard is the most likely failure point

Alert chipset heat sink not detected system halted error message

It is NOT the CPU fan! There is a heatsink over the northbridge chipset adjacent to the CPU. The clip that supplies pressure to maintain contact between the northbridge and the heatsink has detached on one or both ends. There are wire loops at each end of the clip which feed into the motherboard. When the clip detaches (solder failure), it pops the loop out of the motherboard. The BIOS recognizes this condition as a heatsink failure, hence the error message.

Dell dimension 4700 blinking yellow light

Are you getting any beep signals? You could have a massive motherboard failure or you could be having something a little easier to fix...like a memory failure...do a little research on beep codes on google if you are getting beeps from the motherboard...Also, try opening your machine and pulling out the memory sticks and trying them one at a time...if the machine works with one and not the other (for example) then you may need to simply replace that bad stick of memory...

Overheating?

This is usually CPU overheating (loose heatsink?).
To be sure it is not your XP, boot from the recovery CD and see if it will stay running for a while.
Check memory modules are in OK and not loose in sockets.
Otherwise, you will need to check the CPU+Heatsink and CPU fan.
If you put it in a cold place overnight and when you switch it on next morning it gets much further, then it sounds like overheating problem due to heatsink or fan.
