My PS2 makes this clicking noise now whenever I try to load a game with a silver surface. It just clicks and the disc doesn't spin. If I hit reset, it will start to load and play but only if the game has a black or dark surface. Games with a siver or reflective surface will only click, click, click and not load. This problem started at first with just a few games, but now with all most all of them. I've tried using a CD/DVD lens cleaner, and cleaning and polishing the game discs . All to no avail.

PS2 games are region locked which means that disks from other regions won't work on your PS2. If it keeps displaying that message it means that you need to buy the region appropiate disk.
Games like God of War 2, Grand Turismo 4 etc take time to load and some times these games are not loaded by consoles with weak lenses or dirty lens. You should consider cleaning your lens.Cleaning lens might solve your problem plus here is a trick for you to play such heavy games(Although its about playing DVDs on PS2 but you can play your game by following this tip the same way.) Your PS2 lens is displaced from its original position that is what scratching your Discs and makes weird noises too. There can possibly be another reason for them ,your PS2's reading lens is dirty and it is covered by a layer of dust that scratches your Discs and makes sounds too. You should first clean the lens of your PS2 watch this video to know how to clean your PS2's lens:
Disk read errors are mainly due to dirty or worn out lens,so clean your PS2's lens to get rid of this problem and as for that sound that will get fixed by cleaning lens if still it makes that sound then you will have to take your PS2 to repairer to set the lens height. Thank you!
I had the same problem with mine. it would play the ps2 games just fine but when i put a DVD in, it would click and keep saying reading disc.. i took it apart and gently cleaned the lense with a qtip and now it works fine
Fat and Slim PS2's generally have different playability with disks. a slim, for example, does not want to play old blue-backed disks, though it will easily read PSX black backs.
I'll need more information on the disk and the PS2 to give a complete answer.
To me if you have the old fat PS2's then it sounds like the motors are worn out. You can't fix this unless it's still under warranty and call PlayStation. But if not under warranty, try to seel it to like a pawn shop or something to get cash and I recommend getting the slim PS2. The disc tray pops open like the PS1, and the only thing that can mess that up is it getting something spilled in it to make it sticky. I've had mine for about 5 years now and it hasn't messed up at all. But make sure not to play burnt discs on it or it will get used to them and not play regular discs. Hope this solves!
i have noticed that playing two player with the sound too.. my disk was dirty too.clean it first.. Second if your just playing through your T.V. well its prob mono.. or if your playing through a home audio/video check your audio rca's make sure there pluged in all the way. if you are using home stereo newer model you can use the fiber optic on your ps2 the sound is better make sure your stereo has the same thing or it would be a wasted trip to the store.
the problem with god of war 2 is the ps2 lasers are not capable of reading the dual layer disks. either wait and get a ps3, change the laser - i just bought on for 3 quid on e bay brand new. the lasers are not designed to be played the amount they are played. the laser is designed to play 20 hours a week but as sony found out he avg gamer will clock up up tp 60 hours a week so the lasers are only lasting 1/3rd of the time they should. plus if they put a good laser in the machine u would one buy 1 ps2 and then 1 ps3. i have burned out 3 ps2's so far lol. just forget the game or wait till its put on platinum as these are single layerd disk
