Question about Kitchen Ranges

2 Answers

They typically charge over $150.00 for a licensed Plumber to install the gas range or clothes dryer. If a person is a good skilled mechanic and finger tightens all the connections fully, being very careful not to cross-thread any fittings, then tightens the connections to about 30 foot pounds of torque, what else is needed? Do you have to add any "old fasioned Pipe Dope" to the fitting to make sure the seal is tight, or do today's fittings just work fine without it? Rick.

I am only talking about the use of a sealant on the threads of gas pipe fittings or not the use of a sealant. Obviously, the fittings must be tightened correctly and tested with soapy water to be sure there are no leaks before you proceed with any lighting of the pilot or any other flame.

That is the answer I was expecting, the simple use of a teflon tape as a lubricant. Thanks.

Teflon Tape, Pipe Dope, and "The Green Stuff" are all simply lubricants.
(that is a highly debated topic among Tradesmen however)
Metal on Metal makes your seal... the teflon simply acts as a lubricant so you can tighten the threads onto one another more easily..
When dealing with gas - however (and is code in some states anyway) it is good to use a "sealant" or pipe dope as you call it - to .. #1 get a tighter thread compression - and #2 to protect your home.

Metal expands and contracts with temperature, and may eventually loosen enough to develop a leak. It also corrodes... and adding a sealant/lubricant will allow for easier uncoupling in the future.

I would spend the $.49 on a roll of teflon tape... or $4 on a small can of "The Green Stuff" as a good investment to protect your future. :D

They charge that much because they are usually certified gasfitters! If you don't install something correctly and wind up causing a fire or explosion in your house, guess what? NO INSURANCE! Don't try to do it yourself. Almost always a municipal building permit is required to do any gasfitting work in your home, and can be obtained only by a licensed and certified gasfitter.

More than likely a bad timer assembly. They are usually easy enough to replace if you have basic mechanical skills. The part can be ordered from

I got a GE gas range (model JGBS22) from a co-worker. She had converted it from gas to propane. I just had a plumber hook it up to natural gas but, even with the conversion manual, he couldn't change the...

There should be a set of orifices for each burner as well as the oven and broiler. When the unit was converted to propane, these orifices should have been replaced and the ones for gas put in with the conversion kit installation information. The kit should have been reattached near the pressure regulator.

If the kit was missing the orifices, then, yes, you are missing pieces. Check with your coworker if the conversion kit was missing. If you have the kit, it can be easily done by any appliance installer (or repair person) licensed for handling NG. (At least on our range, the conversion kit installation was straight forward. Every orifice was clearly labeled with the labels different for each burner and for the gas/LP kits (ABCD (NG) vs MNOP (LP)) .) The regulator is the only part that switched for LP or NG without the kit.

As I recall, the only tools we needed for the top burners were a small wrench (10 mm) and a small flat blade screwdriver. Remove one orifice and put in the appropriate replacement. Then adjust the burners so that they didn't blow out when the oven was opened or quickly turned from high to low (for the simmer burner). The oven and broiler took a bit longer. Several screws had to be removed to get at the orifices. Then the air flow had to be adjusted for the incoming gas.

I hope this helps.

Bought Kenmore 796.9044 gas dryer in Dec. 2010. Was told by salesman to wait for dryer to arrive and order my LP conversion kit per the instructions provided with the unit. When I picked it up, I ordered...

It should come with a manual. It does simply installs after removing the other regulator & do use pipe dope too. The orfice is really the only thing needed to change although it is calibrated so it will be fairly easy to change around

Maytag Atlantis MDG8400AWW Dryer Runs Cool

I had a similar problem years back. It was the ignitor. The ignitor is a ceramic like piece that heats up (glows red) that ignites the gas. Typically when that goes, you will see some white residue build up where it cracked, thus breaking the electrical connection. This thing works like a heating element on an electric stove, but rougher looking.

The part was about $30 at my local parts store. I bought an extra one just in case so I have it on hand. I installed it with common tools.

You can check it to see if you lost connection by using a volt meter.

Good luck.

Dacor pgm 365 lp to naural gas

Yes by a licensed person so as not to break any local laws or Kill You,
LPg typically delivers at a higher psi than natural gas, and the propane content requires more combustion air than the methane butane mix of natural gas,
methane CH4 needs 2 oxygen (O2) to make CO2 +2 H20
Propane C4H10 needs 7.5 (02) 4 CO2 5 H2O
the nozzle injecting the LPg has small diameter, The Gas certified plumber can remove the nozzle(s) and replace them with larger diameter Natural gas ones for a small price, most manufacturers make both, its a simple job
Cant stress - Gas Certified plumber/tradesman - strongly enough, one explosion will ruin your whole day
