Question about Kitchen Ranges
Teflon Tape, Pipe Dope, and "The Green Stuff" are all simply lubricants.
(that is a highly debated topic among Tradesmen however)
Metal on Metal makes your seal... the teflon simply acts as a lubricant so you can tighten the threads onto one another more easily..
When dealing with gas - however (and is code in some states anyway) it is good to use a "sealant" or pipe dope as you call it - to .. #1 get a tighter thread compression - and #2 to protect your home.
Metal expands and contracts with temperature, and may eventually loosen enough to develop a leak. It also corrodes... and adding a sealant/lubricant will allow for easier uncoupling in the future.
I would spend the $.49 on a roll of teflon tape... or $4 on a small can of "The Green Stuff" as a good investment to protect your future. :D

They charge that much because they are usually certified gasfitters! If you don't install something correctly and wind up causing a fire or explosion in your house, guess what? NO INSURANCE! Don't try to do it yourself. Almost always a municipal building permit is required to do any gasfitting work in your home, and can be obtained only by a licensed and certified gasfitter.
