Question about System Power Supplies

1 Answer

Power supply I have a Sony Vaio desktop model PCV-RS530G Computer. I up-graded the graphics card and need a more powerful power supply than the one supplied with the computer. I was told that the Sony Vaio PSU's are proprietary. Is there any way to upgrade this power supply? Evidently it's the size that's the problem. Thank you! JOhn

Did you open the case on your computer? It may have an open case alarm which is a small switch typically located near the edge of the cover you removed. Make sure the case cover is completely installed, then see if the alarm goes off.

No, if you attempt that then your computer with either not work because of video card errors, or it will boot up and run for a couple hours and then the graphics card will most likely melt due to insufficient power to the fan. Your best bet is to return the video card and buy a video card that is compatible, or buy a new power supply with the connections that you require.

Fan in power supply not working, computer powers up but no video display. Tried a different graphics card same result. It is possible that the power supply is not providing power to the adapter card

If the fan in the power supply is not running it might be due to old age and dirt and lint keeping it from turning. In almost every case I just replace the fan in the power supply and every thing is ok. If the power supply doesn't keep cool it will shut down on thermal overload.

Open the power supply case (be careful due to high voltages within the power supply) and look for swollen (tops are domed) or burst capacitors (tops have cracked open due to excessive swelling and the electrolitic fluid has leaked out). We have found this to be a regular problem for systems that have been running constantly for a long period of time. Also, look at the power caps on your mainboard (big ones nearest the CPU) and check for swelling or bursting. I just had tis issue with a Sony Vaio in that the caps in the power supply had started to swell. The system continually rebooted. Have seen the caps on MB's burst as well.

How to check if my power supply is already not ''at the limit''?

1 or 2 extra hdds and ram does not require much extra power and your coolmaster should do the job. But if you intend to use a newer graphic card you should check the requirenments for wattage at your new card manufacturer product specification webpage. I am pretty sure that almost all newer graphic cards require at least 500 watt to run without problem. My advise is to buy at least a 550 watt psu although i don't know what is your hardware. Try to post your hardware specs and calculate for each component (cpu wattage+graphics wattage +etc) your power supply need to be over 50 wattage. Hope that helped!

Installed new Mother board and cannot get the power supply to turn on computer. How can I tell if the Power supply is bad or something else is wrong?

First off is the power supply powerful enough for this new mobo? is it new, old?. Is the motherboard securely earthed either in the case or on test bench?
If you have it in a case already strip out everything leaving just the motherboard and graphic card in. Power up now.
If this works put the memory back in.
Then hard drive etc until you have everything you need installed.
If it doesn't work you should try another graphic card if you have access to one. Also make sure the graphic card is seated properly.
If none of the above works then there is a good chance you have a faulty motherboard so best to replace it.

Current FSP300-60tha(1) psu needs to be replaced. Is there a recommended replacement model?

Is this a power supply in a desktop computer?
If so, any make ATX switch mode power supply will fit in the desktop case (the mounting holes are standard), just make sure the total output wattage is equal to or greater than the original unit. I suggest you remove the power supply and take it with you to your friendly computer shop when you purchase a switch mode power supply.
